Plentiful, but slow gathering source of Coin.
—In-game description

Salt Mines are a source of coin in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - The African Royals.

Salt Mines provide 10,000 coin – twice as much as a Gold Mine. It can be mined by villagers and Miners, who do so 30% slower than in other mines.

Settlers can gather coin faster from the Salt Mine with Market upgrades such as Placer Mines and Amalgamation.

Building a Trading Post on a Berber settlement allows the player to train a Berber Salt Camel which can turn into a Salt Mine; the player cannot train additional Salt Camels as long as this Salt Mine is present.

The Salt Mine reuses the portrait of a Gold Mine.

History[]

In the premodern world, salt was of crucial value not only as a seasoning but also as a preservative. Although slow to mine and refine, salt paid dividends and was at one point in time more valuable than gold.
