“ | Intelligent ranged hero who specifically targets myth unis by itself. Can heal allied units and summon mirror images of enemy myth units. Collects Relics. | ” |
—In-game description |
The Sage is a Chinese hero in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars. Available in the Heroic Age at the Imperial Academy, Sages are healers whose special ability allows them to temporarily stun an enemy myth unit and summon a "mirror image" of the unit to fight for the player owning the Sage. They are limited to five at a time.
Special abilities[]
Sacred Hands (Passive): Can pick up Relics and deposit them at a Temple.
Replicate (Charged): Target an enemy myth unit in a range of 13 to stun it and summon a mirror image to temporarily fight for you. (Stuns target myth unit and spawns a friendly copy of it for 8 seconds. Works on all myth units except the Titan, Nidhogg, and Yinglong, so it affects the Carnivora, Phoenix Egg, and Spider Egg. The mirror image persists for the duration even if the Sage dies. Recharge time: 60 seconds)
Heal (Active, automatic): Heal an injured allied unit, restoring it to full hitpoints. (50% rate for non-idle units)
Distributed Heal (Active, automatic, requires Herbal Medicine, replaces Heal): Heal an injured allied unit. Nearby units are healed at a reduced rate. (50% rate for non-idle units, 3 max passively healed units at successively halved rates)

Tactics[]
The main combat ability of the Sage is that he can stun an enemy myth unit and summon a temporary mirror image of it that fights for the player's side. The mirror image myth unit retains the same abilities and upgrades as its original self, so it can be used to fight off other enemy units. They can be distinguished easily as they appear to be made out of mud. In combat, the Sage, as a ranged hero, is strong against myth units, especially flying ones like the Qinglong and Phoenix.
As a healer unit, the Sage is important in keeping a Chinese player's units alive. His standard healing ability heals one unit at a time, like most healers. Worshippers of Shennong can research Herbal Medicine, allowing him to also passively heal allied units near the targeted unit at a reduced rate. His healing abilities can be further supplemented with Shennong's myth unit regeneration when on Favored Land, helping to keep the player's myth units alive for longer.
Fuxi players can improve Sages even further by increasing their attack and decreasing their hack and pierce vulnerability, as well as shortening their train time. Following up with Gonggong in the Mythic Age allows the player to boost the Sages' hit points and bonus damage versus myth units, along with a reduction to their non-favor costs and special ability recharge time.
When faced with multiple myth units, a Sage should be used on units which have greater damage output rather than units which are better at tanking enemy attacks, as the value extracted will often be better for the former type due to the low duration of the mirror image. When defending a base or Town Center against enemy attacks, it may be preferable for the Sage to prioritize anti-building myth units such as giants, Colossi, Scarabs, Taowus, Centimani, and Behemoths. When fighting enemy Sages, players should be careful with what myth units are exposed to them, try to kill replicated myth units quickly if they deal high damage, and to task units to avoid wasting time by attacking them if they are instead just resilient without being dangerous.

History[]
“ | In Chinese belief systems, the sage was one of the most respected figures: regarded as a beacon of wisdom and nobility, and venerated for their virtue and scholarly ability. There are many notable sages throughout Chinese history, such as the Four Sages of the Confucian Tradition (Yan Hui, Mengzi, Zisi, and Mencius) and the Five Sage Emperors. With their persuasive eloquence, sages can charm enemy creatures. Additionally, they often rely on their esteemed reputation to bolster troop morale and heal comrades, making them the most respected individuals in the camp. |

Trivia[]
- There are several ways to write the title "Sage" in Chinese. They include 聖賢(圣贤), 智者, and 聖君(圣君), among others. This unit's in-game name in Traditional Chinese is 哲人, and in the Simplified Chinese version, its name is 圣贤.
- The object the Sage and Cangjie carry is a fuzi, also known as fuchen or fly-whisk.
- When playing on the Arena of the Gods game mode, the World Twist "Horus' Ancestral Protection" revives the "mirror images" created by the Sage's special ability as if they were regular units. As such, Chinese players can receive myth units from other pantheons for the duration of the game. Replicated Phoenixes do not spawn Eggs on death since update 18.15886.
- If Traitor is invoked on a myth unit that is being charmed by a Sage, the myth unit will repeatedly perform its death animation and be unable to move or attack until the "mirror image" is killed or expires.
- While the Sage can replicate Phoenix and Spider Eggs, these "mirror images" will simply sit idle until they expire, without producing their respective myth units.
