This article is about the untrainable unit in Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten. For other uses, see Janissary.

The Royal Janissary is an untrainable gunpowder unit in Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten. It is only available in the Scenario Editor. Apart from the HP, it has exactly the same stats as the Elite version of the regular Turkish unique unit, the Janissary.

Campaign appearances[]

Francisco de Almeida[]

Vlad Dracula[]

  • The Dragon Spreads His Wings: In the HD Edition, Sultan Murad II's bodyguards are Royal Janissaries.
  • The Moon Rises: In the HD Edition, there are Royal Janissaries under the Ottoman General during the initial Turkish raid into Wallachia.

Tamerlane[]

  • A Titan Amongst Mortals: Sultan Bayezid's army has Royal Janissaries in its main camp. They attack Tamerlane's forces alongside the other Ottoman troops following the initial skirmishes of the scenario.

Victors and Vanquished[]

  • Constantine XI: The Ottoman army fields Royal Janissaries.
  • Fetih: The Ottoman army fields Royal Janissaries.

Event scenarios[]

  • The Siege: Both Ottoman armies in Anatolia and Thrace have Royal Janissaries.

Trivia[]

  • The regular Janissary was originally planned to have the design used by the Royal variant, the reason for the change was "Because testers and Ensemble employees would comment that the Janissary looked like a "Ku Klux Klan" member".
  • Despite not featuring as a unit until The Forgotten, Royal Janissaries are shown stationed besides a Mosque in one of the screenshots that play at the start of the Marching and Fighting scenario in the William Wallace Learning Campaign in The Age of Kings.
  • Royal Janissaries are not affected by the Turkish additional hit point bonus, but benefit from other bonuses such as the Spanish faster Rate of Fire and the Portuguese Arquebus.
  • In the The Age of Kings and The Conquerors manuals, the Turks' unique unit is shown with the Royal Janissary instead of Janissary icon.
  • The unit's sprite is used as the icon for the Historical Battle scenario Bapheus. Despite this, they don't make an appearance in the scenario.
  • Before update 141935, if a Royal Janissary was attacked by a Dire Wolf, it failed to shoot the wolf automatically, thus being killed without any resistance. The only way to prevent this was to move inside the selection box of the wolf and then shoot it.
