Ships 13 skilled Halberdiers from the homeland.
—In-game description

Royal Alabarderos is a technology in Age of Empires III that is unique to the Spanish and can be researched at the Church once the Fortress Age is reached and the Royal Decree to Claim the New World Home City Card has been sent. Once researched, 13 Guard Halberdiers will appear in the Home City shipment point.

Royal Alabarderos is the only way for the Spanish to acquire Halberdiers.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Alabardero means Halberdier in Spanish.
  • The original name of the technology was "Quatrefage". The word isn't Spanish and has no apparent relevance to Spanish military in Age of Empires III's time period. It may have been mistakenly adapted from the name of René Quatrefages, a French historian specialized on the Spanish Tercio. Unlike other similar technologies, this technology didn't rename the Halberdiers.
  • In the original game, the Halberdiers shipped by this technology speak Dutch despite being used by the Spanish. This is changed in the Definitive Edition, where the Halberdiers now have the same dialogue as the Spanish Pikeman.
    • Nevertheless, the Dutch language may have been an intentional reference to the Burgundian and Walloon Guards of the Kings of Spain.
