—Age of Empires IV description |
The Ribauldequin is a gunpowder siege engine in Age of Empires IV specialized in defeating melee units. It is available at the Siege Workshop and various landmarks to the English, French, Jeanne d'Arc, and Ottomans. The Japanese have access to the Ribauldequin through the Tanegashima Gunsmith landmark.
The Ribauldequin scatters 12 projectiles in quick succession across a 2.5 tile x 1 tile rectangular area. Each projectile additionally has a small, 0.375 tile area-of-effect. Dealing ranged damage instead of siege damage, it is ineffective against buildings, which have enough ranged armor to almost completely nullify their attack.
Tactics[]
In a similar way that the Mangonel is intended to counter masses of ranged units, the Ribauldequin is specialized in defeating masses of melee units. At over 500 damage per volley, not including Area of Effect damage, a Ribauldequin deals by far the most base DPS (against units) out of any unit. Combined with the ability to deal this damage over a reasonably large area in multiple shots, even one or two of these will mow down entire groups of units within range. Any melee units that do make it through are further blunted by its 10 melee armor, respectable amount of hit points, and lack of minimum range. Melee cavalry will do better than infantry due to their ability to close in faster and their higher hit points, but the matchup is still not favorable, unlike with all other siege weapons.
The Ribauldequin's weakness that prevents it from being an all-encompassing threat is its extremely short range and low ranged resistance. It is outranged by every other ranged unit in the game except an un-upgraded Mangudai. As such, most ranged infantry and ranged cavalry are good counters. Additionally, high-damage long-ranged siege engines such as Culverins, and Bombards can also easily destroy them from afar without any risk of the Ribauldequin being able to attack back. Therefore, like Mangonels, it is good to pair Ribauldequins with units that can deal with both enemy siege and ranged units, such as melee cavalry.
