The Revolutionary (called Colonial Militia before the Definitive Edition) is a unit introduced in Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs.

Variants[]

There are three versions of the Revolutionary: the Random map version, the Campaign version, and the Villager version.

Solid general-purpose infantry. Good against cavalry.
—In-game description

In random map games, the Revolutionary is only available to revolutionary nations (except Canada and South Africa), where all Settlers and their derivatives will turn into Revolutionary (Settler Wagons turn into two Revolutionaries instead) and they can be trained at the Town Center; the British can also train them at their Manor Houses.

Revolutionaries function in a similar manner to Militiamen, both appear similar, have similar attack, and can be trained from the Town Center, but Revolutionaries are much stronger in attack overall and do not lose hit points over time like Militiamen, but are fairly weak in comparison to other infantry units, making them basically hybrid musketeer/skirmishers. However, Musketeers and Skirmishers both outperform the Revolutionary in their separate roles.

In the original The WarChiefs, choosing Toussaint L'Ouverture as the revolutionary leader will increase the Revolutionary's hit points by 10%.

Upgrades[]

The Revolutionary has -25% hit points and attack, -0.5 speed, -0.66 ranged attack multiplier against cavalry and -0.4 against shock infantry penalties starting from the Commerce Age, and is automatically upgraded in the Fortress Age and Industrial Age to their normal characteristics:

  • Fortress age up +15% hit points and attack, +0.25 speed, +0.33 ranged attack multiplier against cavalry and +0.2 against shock infantry
  • Industrial age up +10% hit points and attack, +0.25 speed, +0.33 ranged attack multiplier against cavalry and +0.2 against shock infantry

Nation differences[]

  • Barbary States, Canada, Finland, Gran Colombia, Mexico, and South Africa do not have Revolutionaries.
  • Revolting to Brazil turn Revolutionaries into Voluntarios da Patria which have half hit points and attack, as well as cost and train/kill bounties. As soon as the player revolts to Brazil, each of the player's Settler also turns into two (four for Settler Wagons) Voluntarios da Patria, and Voluntarios da Patria also appears at the Home City shipment point with the amount is twice the amount of Villagers the player the moment they revolted. Instead of being trained directly, Voluntarios da Patria are automatically spawned by Brazilian Town Centers.
  • Revolting to Egypt turn Revolutionaries into Khevite Fusiliers which have +0.5 bonus attack against artillery and siege units in Stagger Mode, +0.5 bonus attack against cavalry and +0.2 against shock infantry in Melee Mode, but have -10% hit points.
  • Revolting to Haiti turn Revolutionaries into Maroons which have -15% hit points, +2 range, -1.5 XP train and kill bounty, and cost -10 food
  • Revolting to Hungary turn Revolutionaries into Grenzers which can collect treasures and have 4 more range and 3.0x multiplier against treasure guardians, but has 10% less hit points.
  • Peru can turn Revolutionaries into Peruvian Legions with the Peruvian Guard Home City Card, which have a secondary ranged attack by throwing grenades like that of Grenadiers; the grenade attack deals 19 Siege damage with 2 AoE, 14 range, 4 Rate of Fire, and 12 minimum range.
  • Revolting to Romania turn Revolutionaries into Dorobants which have 10% more hit points but have 2 less range.

Light infantry with low hitpoints, but a long-ranged attack. Good against infantry.
—In-game description

In the Act I: Fire campaign, the Revolutionary can be trained in Nathaniel Black's War Huts and acts as the basic soldier for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Their stats and price are slightly changed compared to their Revolution variant, making them resemble regular Skirmishers. However, they can be upgraded to Veteran and Guard levels.

Upgrades[]

Age III tech tree aoe3

Trivia[]

  • The Campaign version of the Revolutionary is the only unit with the Veteran level upgrade available in the Commerce Age and the Guard level upgrade available in the Fortress Age.
    • Despite being renamed to Revolutionary in the Definitive Edition, their upgrade levels still show the original name Militia.
  • The Revolutionary speak with recycled dialogue originally used for Major Cooper (voiced by James Horan) with the pitch raised slightly.

A soldier who can gather Wood, but not other resources. He looks cold.
—In-game description

These Revolutionaries appears in the Valley Forge scenario of the Act I: Fire campaign, and act as a villagers that can only gather wood and are essential in gathering wood at the start to build Huts.

The villager Revolutionary appears exactly the same as the infantry version, only that the idle villager button will show up when the former are idle.

Trivia[]

  • When ordered to gather wood or build Huts, the villager Revolutionary doesn't have any respond voice clips.

Definitive Edition[]

Knights of the Mediterranean[]

  • With update 14.43676, Revolutionaries shipped by Risorgimento received a new model. The "Peruvian Guard" Home City Card grants a new model for Peruvian Legions.

Trivia[]

Definitive Edition[]

  • Brazilian Revolutionaries are named after the original Portuguese name of the Fatherland Volunteers.
  • Hungarian Revolutionaries are named after the Grenzers. They were an Austrian unit featured in the Napoleonic Era mod. One of the developers of the mod worked on the Definitive Edition.
  • Peru's "Peruvian Guard" Home City Card and the renamed Revolutionaries refer to the original name of the Peruvian Army, Legión Peruana de la Guardia ("Peruvian Guard Legion").
  • Dorobant Romanian Revolutionaries' name refers to Romanian infantry who fought in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877.
  • Drabant, Trabant and Dorobant share the same root from trabant/drabant, originally a Hussite Czech word, "foot soldier".

History[]

The WarChiefs[]

The term militia refers to a citizen's military force, and not under the direct control or authority of a central government. Each of the original thirteen British colonies in North America had their own militias. They were composed of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was considered one's civic duty to serve in the local militia to protect the colony from outside attacks.

During the early days of the U.S. Revolutionary War, local militias played a key role in the initial skirmishes with British regulars. The battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill were carried out by local militias. To bolster the fledgling country's military capabilities, the Continental Congress established a formal American Continental Army on 14 June 1775, which officially created six companies of expert riflemen, from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.

Definitive Edition[]

The European empires in the New World lasted in most cases for a little more than 300 years. By the early nineteenth century most European colonies had thrown off their Old World masters and had become independent nations through revolutionary wars. The first revolution by the Thirteen British colonies resulted in the eventual formation of the United States. The success of this revolution was assured when the United States stated its Monroe Doctrine, forbidding any power from further conquests or colony placement in the Americas, and Great Britain made it clear that its navy would not allow such actions either.

Soon other occupied countries in the Americas and Europe were to follow the example of the successful revolution in North America. The French Revolution of 1789 toppled the Bourbon monarchy that had ruled France for 200 years. The Greeks and Serbians put an end to Ottoman rule. Revolutionary armies in the Americas were often led by experienced officers and generals who prior to the revolution served in the military of the colonial powers, and not seldomly were of European heritage. The military skills of revolutionary leaders like Simón Bolívar, José de San Martín, or Bernardo O'Higgins were of paramount importance in liberating Latin America from centuries of Spanish and Portuguese colonial rule. Not all wars of liberation were immediately successful. The revolutions and rebellions in Ireland, Poland, Romania, and Hungary took several attempts before eventually succeeding.
