—In-game description in Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend |
Resource Pickups are items that appear in several campaign scenarios in Age of Empires IV and Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend. They can be collected by any unit simply by right-clicking on it with the unit selected.
In the four original campaigns of Age of Empires IV, all Resource Pickups are called Treasure Chests, and they provide all types of resources to the player in varying amounts, most often gold. In The Sultans Ascend, each resource type has its own pickup - Food Crate, Wood Cache, Gold Chest, and Stone Cache - and they give 200 of their respective resource. The first three can also be found in the water as Floating Food Crates, Floating Wood Crates, and Floating Gold Chests on any scenario with a water component, such as Raiders of the Red Sea or The Invasion of Cyprus. They are found not only floating freely in the water, but are dropped randomly by enemy ships upon sinking them.
Resource Pickups can be important sources of income in a number of campaign scenarios, particularly where the player is unable to build an economy, but can still use resources to research upgrades or recruit allies, such as in the scenario The Battle of Formigny in the The Hundred Years War campaign, The Battle of Tinchebray in the The Normans campaign, The Battle of Kulikovo in the The Rise of Moscow campaign, and The Song Fortress in the The Mongol Empire campaign. In The Sultans Ascend, they are not used anywhere as a replacement for resource gathering, but rather to supplement a standard economy. In certain scenarios, they can be found before a player gains control of any Villagers or economic buildings as a way to jump-start the economy, such as in The Defense of Tyre or The Battle of Mansurah.
