A regional unit is an unofficial classification for units that are only available to certain civilizations in Age of Empires II that historically shared the same region, belonged to the same geographic group, or were united in certain historical periods.
Regional units are distinct from unique units in that they are shown in the technology tree of every civilization, and are available in Full Tech Tree mode.
While possibly available to multiple civilizations, shared unique units (Genitour, Condottiero) and shared unique upgrades (Imperial Skirmisher, Winged Hussar) are not considered regional units, since they are not available in full tech tree mode and are not shown in technology trees of other civilizations, are marked with unique unit colour in the technology trees, and/or cannot be linked to a single region or architecture set.

- The Camel Rider line is available to civilizations in specific regions, but they are also very widespread, as they can be found in the civilizations in six regions/architecture sets: Middle Eastern, Central Asian, East Asian, South Asian/Indian, Mediterranean, and African.
- While technically being a regional unit, the Dromon is also a period-specific unit available to European civilizations of Late Antiquity and early Middle Ages.
