The Regent (named Regent (Hero) before Retold) is a special hero unit available to all civilizations when playing on the Regicide random map in Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon, or the Regicide game mode in Retold. The Regent has the same appearance for each civilization, but will use a different voice for each one, using the default human soldier voice line specific to the civilization.
Unlike other heroes, he cannot collect Relics, even after a Temple is constructed.

Strategy[]
At the start of the game, the player can use him effectively as an extra scout. Enemy scouts are generally not a threat in the first Age, so the Regent can scout relatively unbothered. They should take care to not send the Regent too far away however, as they can be killed if they get close to an enemy's Town Center (or god power effects such as Sentinels or the Gullinbursti). By the Classical Age, the enemy will have a myth unit among other military units; as the Regent is a frail combatant, he is best kept garrisoned in the Town Center at this point. Later on, the player may transfer him to a Fortress, or a nondescript tower somewhere else, in case their Town Centers become targets of sustained assaults or god powers.
The Regent cannot be healed, so any damage taken is generally permanent. Certain bonuses and technologies allow him to regenerate, however.
Regents must be kept close to the player's main base where they will be protected by the Town Center. Raiding units such as Camelry can easily outrun the Regents so they should be guarded by anti-cavalry units. Players may choose to protect their Regent by keeping it within a walled space but should be careful not to let it be surrounded by enemy units. The Regent is immune to certain god powers (such as Bolt, Spy, and Traitor) to prevent an easy win for specific god choices. The Regent cannot be converted by Monks.
The Regent has reasonable hit points and speed, but his low armor makes him vulnerable. The Regent cannot attack other units, making him even more helpless. Unlike most other units, he cannot be healed, so using him in any combat is not recommended.Changelog[]
Tale of the Dragon[]
- The Regent is portrayed as a hero but is technically not a hero, thus being a semi-hero. He can collect Relics.
- He cannot attack and cannot be garrisoned in buildings.
Retold[]
- He is a full hero, but he cannot collect Relics. He can be garrisoned in buildings.
- He has a melee attack of 5
hack with a Rate of Fire of 1, and an attack multiplier of 5× vs. myth units.
- With update 17.36100, his attributes are increased with Age-ups like most other heroes.
In-game dialogue[]
The Regent uses the military dialogue lines corresponding of which civilization/god the player starts. However, if the player starts with Freyr or any of the Chinese (Immortal Pillars) gods, the Regent will remain silent. That's because the mentioned gods are absent from the Regent's XMB file script.
History[]
“ | A regent is a ruler of the empire. Regents were often considered temporary rules for various reasons such as the successor to the throne being a minor, or the royal line having died out. Much like the king, however, the regent is the head of the empire and with his death comes the end. When a Regicide game is played, the regent must survive at all costs for when he dies, the game is lost. | ” |

Trivia[]
- The Regent has the same appearance regardless of the civilization played.
- The Regent uses the same models and textures as the cut Achilles unit from the Multiplayer Alpha, and by extension, Misenus.
- Before Retold, the Regent used the same icon as Krios.
- Before Retold, although he had the hero glow, "Hero" in his name, and could pick up Relics, he was not technically as a hero. In Retold, despite being a hero, he lacks a hero glow, but now has the hero birth sound effect.
