“ | British skirmisher. Equipped with a rifle to counter Heavy Infantry more effectively, but has less range. | ” |
—In-game description |
The Ranger is a ranged gunpowder infantry in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition that is unique to the British and replaces the Longbowman after sending the "Rangers" card or researching Queen's Rangers. It was introduced in update 13.690.
Overview[]
Similar to the Skirmisher, the Ranger is strong against heavy infantry and light ranged cavalry, but weak against melee cavalry and artillery. Rangers have a slightly increased food cost and reduced coin cost, less range and hit points than Skirmishers, but deal more damage, have larger Line of Sight, slightly higher speed and resist slightly more ranged damage.
Rangers can be obtained after sending the card "Rangers" from the Home City, allowing the player to train them at the Barracks, Fort and Galleon, replacing the Longbowman. Once the "Rangers" card is sent, all Longbowmen present in the map and their Home City Cards will be replaced with Rangers instead, and the "Yeomen" and "Siege Archery" Home City Cards will be replaced with "Baker Rifles" and "Ranger Combat", respectively, so players should be careful if they want to continue using Longbowmen and their upgrades, or favor Rangers over them. Rangers can also be trained instead of Longbowmen after researching Queen's Rangers in the Industrial Age, which also sends 30 Veteran Rangers, and upgrading the remaing Rangers to Veteran level.
Researching Roger's Rangers in the Commerce Age will send 5 Rangers and replaces Longbowmen present in the map with Rangers, but it will not allow players to train them.
Due to being gunpowder units, Rangers will benefit from upgrades like Flint Lock and Paper Cartridge, which makes them useful support units with Musketeers, who also benefit from these upgrades. Additionally, their increased attack and multipliers, combined with Musketeers' high ranged attack, allows them to take down heavy infantry more easily.
If the player picks The Adventurer for aging up into the Fortress Age with the British and researched Roger's Rangers, the player will receive 7 Rangers.
Upgrades[]
After sending "Rangers" from the Home City, all Longbowmen upgrades will be replaced with Ranger upgrades. Longbowmen upgrades will also benefit Rangers.

Trivia[]
- While the unit's name refer to the Roger's Rangers, the "95" on its hat and the uniform of the Imperial Ranger match the uniforms of the British Army's Rifle Brigade, more commonly known as the 95th Rifles or Green Jackets, which served from the dawn of the 19th century to the present day, and were featured in the Bernard Cornwell Sharpe novels and television series.
- Due to a bug, the Consulate version of Rangers have 30% ranged resistance instead of 35%.
History[]
“ | When the British Empire began to expand into the heart of North America, it soon found out that traditional volley tactics, long employed to great effect by their Longbowmen and Musketeers, proved ineffectual in the rugged, heavily forested terrain of the frontier land. Following the devastating Braddock's Defeat as part of the French and Indian War in 1755, the British founded the King's Royal Rifle Corps, a regiment of infantrymen who adopted warfare tactics used by Native Americans to adapt to their new environment. These included the use of lighter weapons that allowed for greater mobility, as well as the early use of camouflage. The 95th Experimental Rifles complimented the King's Royal Rifle Corps through the use of Baker Rifles, which, while taking longer to reload, could snipe targets from over twice the distance of muskets, making the regiment much more versatile. The impact of these innovations was so decisive that the Rifle Corps would soon become a staple of nearly all major battles in British military history henceforth. Because of their adeptness to the fickle climate of North America, riflemen formed much of the backbone of early American colonial armies. At the start of the American Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress founded 10 rifle companies in response to the British attacks on Lexington and Concord. Among the ranks of these riflemen were veterans of Roger's Rangers, a recruitment of frontiersmen who fought during the French and Indian War. |
