—In-game description
The Qiongqi (traditional Chinese: 窮奇; simplified Chinese: 穷奇) is a myth unit in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars available to the Chinese at the Temple if they Age up to the Classical Age with Houtu. It is one of the Four Perils from Chinese mythology. The Qiongqi is a winged tiger which also gains saber teeth and a horn after being upgraded. It is an aeroterrestrial unit which can attack only while on ground.
Flight (Active, while aground) Can take off and fly. While in the air, Qionq Qi cannot attack. (Takes 2 seconds, gains Land ability which recharges in 5 seconds)
Land (Active, while flying): Can land on the ground to attack enemies. (Takes 2 seconds, gains Flight ability which recharges in 5 seconds)
Sinister Defiance (Passive, requires Sinister Defiance): Gains more armor when more enemy units are nearby.
The Qiongqi's unique ability allows it to take flight. While in the air, it can fly over obstacles, such as rough terrain, although it can neither attack nor receive attacks from non-ranged units other than a Titan attacking ground troops. The player can use the Qiongqi's flight ability to either bypass obstacles, raid behind enemy lines, retreat from unfavorable encounters, or to even scout the map. In the latter case, the Qiongqi can fly around to find herdables, land on the ground to capture them, and then return to the skies to continue scouting. It is especially useful on maps like Team Migration and Islands where the player will otherwise have to use Transport Ships to move from one island to another. However, a Qiongqi that flies around an enemy's base for a prolonged period of time will eventually be shot down by ranged heroes and fortifications. Likewise, if flying above the water, it becomes a target for archer ships as well. Furthermore, when using a Qiongqi for scouting, it is best to keep it constantly moving around, as having a Qiongqi hovering above a group of worker units may give away one's intention of raiding.
In combat, the Qiongqi is decent against human soldiers and other myth units, having a fast attack dealing decent hack damage. This makes it useful for taking out enemy ranged soldiers and fragile siege weapons from afar. With the Sinister Defiance technology, it can gain extra armor when surrounded by enemy units, further increasing its survivability. As with all myth units, the Qiongqi is weak versus heroes and stronger myth units. While the Qiongqi can take flight to avoid melee-only heroes like Hersirs and Murmillo Heroes, Greek and Chinese heroes can switch to a ranged attack when dealing with flying units, so the Qiongqi may not survive an encounter with them (or any other ranged heroes) unless it flies above obstructions, such as forests, to slow down its attackers and escape from them.
