Fiery Breath (Charged): Shoots a jet of fire, damaging all units in its path. (Deals 15hack / 5crush damage (3× multiplier vs. myth units, 0.25× vs. heroes) to all enemies on the attack line at a range 14. Recharge time: 16 seconds)
Area Heal (Passive): Heals nearby allied units. (Heals itself and all friendly units (including naval and flying units) in an area of 10 around itself by 1 hit point per second, at half speed for non-idle units)
Nimble myth units with an area healing effect, Qilins are useful for keeping the player's armies alive for longer, especially in the Classical Age, where the Chinese otherwise have no means of healing. Their charged special ability allows them to breathe fire, damaging multiple enemy units in their path at once. With the Qilin's Blessing technology, they become even better healers, with a higher healing rate and a wider healing range. Fuxi players can upgrade them further with Nüba's Rock Solid, which increases their armor when standing still, while Nüwa players can follow up with Flaming Blood to allow Qilins to passively damage nearby enemy units while also healing nearby allied units. Shennong players who receive Qilins in the Archaic Age can make use of both of these two technologies, although they won't have access to Qilin's Blessing, since Shennong does not have Xuannü as part of his minor god roster.
In combat, Qilins are good against human soldiers and other myth units, thus making them useful for warding off any early threats from myth units. Due to their high pierce armor, they are also strong against ranged soldiers and siege weapons. However, as with all myth units, they are weak against heroes and are also beaten by stronger myth units.
Initially, the Qilin's special attack deals 12 hack / 4 crush damage. With update 18.21333, it deals 15 hack / 5 crush damage. The speed of the projectile is also increased, making it harder for enemy units to avoid.
Qilin is a mythical creature with a body resembling that of a horse with a horn on its head. It is said that its appearance heralds a golden age or the arrival of a sage, making it a symbol of good fortune in China.
Although the Qilin's description may resemble that of unicorns in other mythologies, the giraffes from Africa presented to Chinese emperors were referred to as Qilin. In fact, in Japanese, both giraffes and Qilin are still called 'Kirin' to this day.
