Promotions are passive abilities introduced in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Knights of the Mediterranean.
Units that benefit from promotions can improve their pre-defined statistics when they defeat an enemy military unit, up to a maximum of three enemy units.
It is not necessary to defeat three units of the same type. This means that units will get fully promoted if they defeat three infantry units equally as if they defeat two cavalry units and one artillery unit.
Promotions represent the historical (and modern) phenomenon of troops honing their skills and being promoted in rank as they gain additional battle experience.
Ranks[]
Each time a unit which benefits from promotions has defeated an enemy military unit, it will gain a rank. This determines the level of the unit, and new ranks are obtained according to the amount of enemy units that have been defeated:
Bronze Rank for the first defeated enemy unit.
Silver Rank for the second defeated enemy unit.
Gold Rank for the third defeated enemy unit.
Each rank will increase the unit's stats permanently, like hit points, speed, or attack, and these can be higher with Home City Cards or unit upgrades.
Additionally, any promoted unit will keep its rank as long as is not lost during the game. Ranks are only applied to the specific unit which has defeated enemy units, and are not shared with other units of the same group.

Trivia[]
- Originally, the Order Galley was the only unit which is not a native warrior, mercenary, or outlaw, that benefited from a Promotion. Since update 13.27885, some Musketeers, Halberdiers, and Crossbowmen can benefit from a promotion through cards to certain civilizations.
