Preparing for Battle is the first scenario in the William Wallace learning campaign in the Xbox version of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. Designed for those who have never before played Age of Empires II on Xbox consoles, it teaches players the basics of controlling units and attacking. It combines the gameplay of the first four scenarios of the PC version of the campaign, viz. Marching and Fighting, Feeding the Army, Training the Troops, and Research and Technology.
Intro[]
We are without a leader. The dead king of Scotland has no heir.
War creeps in from the south, where Edward Longshanks, the avaricious King of England, has returned from successful campaigns in Wales and France. As Longshanks turns his attention to Scotland, the shadow of fear settles across the Highlands.
The English have thousands of Welsh longbowmen, hundreds of knights on horseback, and dozens of siege weapons.
We Scottish have a rabble of untrained soldiers who do not even know how to march in a straight line. We must act soon. If we are to have any chance of resistance, we need to forge an army by any means necessary.

Ally[]
- Scottish Allies ( Celts): First, they aid the player by giving troops to save William Wallace from a small English army. Then, while attacking the English town in the north, they support with military and Trebuchets.
Enemy[]
- English ( Britons): The English are the only opponent. They attack William Wallace outside a Scottish village with a small army. They also have a town in the north surrounded by Stone Walls.
Strategy[]
The player starts with one Militia, and walks him from flag to flag. At the second flag, the player gets four more Militia as well as a Knight and three Archers. When the player reaches the third flag, an English Outpost appears. Destroy it and follow the road to reach the village. Upon reaching the edge of the village, the player has to save William Wallace from small English Army. Once inside the village, William Wallace takes the army to gather support and attack the English, and the village falls under the player's possession.
The player then has to train Villagers, explore the area, and establish the economy so that the Feudal Age can be reached. Once in the Feudal Age, Construct a Barracks to the north, create 3 Militia, and upgrade them to Men-at-Arms. When William Wallace appears with the gathered army, the player has to meet him to the north. Upon meeting William, all the army comes under the player's control. The player then has to take the army and defeat the army outside the Gate of the English town. The Scottish Allies then use two Trebuchets to kill the Gate. When the Gate is destroyed, march inside the English town and destroy the Town Center to win the scenario.
Outro[]
Scotland has soldiers now, if only a few. But if we are to turn back the greed of Edward Longshanks, we will need many more recruits, and much more gold in our coffers.
These ancient stones and oaks around us will soon be steeped in the blood of Clansmen.
