Papal ranged infantry with high hitpoints that absorbs some of the damage inflicted to nearby allies. Performs well against all units. Countered by Artillery.
—In-game description

The Papal Zouave is a gunpowder infantry unit in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Knights of the Mediterranean that is unique to the Italians. It is a lesser version of the Zouave, a ranged infantry unit with no multipliers, but capable of protecting nearby allied units.

Overview[]

The Papal Zouave is a ranged gunpowder infantry unit with high hit points, base attack, and ranged resistance compared with most Skirmisher-type units, but taking two population spaces instead of one, and lacking multipliers against heavy infantry and light ranged cavalry, including the negative multiplier against cavalry, which makes them more a general purpose infantry rather than counter-heavy infantry units. Due to not being tagged as Rifle infantry, it is not affected by the Counter Infantry Rifling technology, meaning it will not get additional multipliers against heavy infantry.

Papal Zouaves are shipped from the Basilica in batches of four for 300 food, 300 wood, 300 coin, taking 60 seconds to arrive. These batches, however, are queued as shipments and will be delayed if the player has sent other Home City Cards before them, but in exchange, it is not required to have available shipments to train them.

Due to their increased hit points and ranged resistance, Papal Zouaves can take more damage than other ranged infantry units and fight for longer. Additionally, they have the Deflection passive ability, which allows them to absorb some of the damage inflicted to nearby player or ally units in a radius of 12, making them effective support infantry units. However, they will be vulnerable against artillery, so it is recommended to protect Papal Zouaves with cavalry to counter enemy artillery. Like other infantry units, Papal Zouaves will be especially vulnerable against lancer-type cavalry, such as Spanish Lancers or Elmeti, who have increased hit points and large attack multipliers against all infantry.

Special abilities[]

  • Deflection: Absorb 25% of the damage inflicted to nearby allies (except artillery) within 12 range.
  • Carbine Attack (requires the "Papal Arsenal" Home City Card): The Papal Zouave fires a single shot from his carbine rifle which deals 64 damage from a range of 25.
  • Health Regeneration: Regenerates hitpoints when idle (0.25% per second after 3.5 seconds idle).

Upgrades[]

The Papal Zouave is automatically upgraded in the Fortress Age, Industrial Age and Imperial Age, but its name is not changed to reflect this.

Trivia[]

History[]

During the 19th century, Zouaves were a light infantry force in the French army recruited primarily from their overseas territories in Africa -- an origin which their name reflects. A variant also developed that was dedicated to the defense of the Papal States, and which primarily drew on devout Catholics from a variety of regions, but also some locals. The Papal Zouaves opposed Garibaldi's forces during the Risorgimento, but were defeated in 1870.
