| —Age of Empires IV description | ||
The Palatine School is a Byzantine landmark in Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend, which the player can choose to advance to the Imperial Age. When a Byzantine unique land unit is created, there is a 30% chance that it will spawn at this landmark as well.
Special ability[]
Any time a Limitanei, Varangian Guard, Cataphract, or Cheirosiphon is trained, there is a 30% chance to also spawn the same unit at the Palatine School. Assuming a perfect 30% spawn, the Palatine School produces 3 units for every 10 units, which translates to 23.08% discount (in both resources and time) if producing the same unit.
| Unit | Normal cost | Normal time | Adjusted cost | Adjusted time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 180 food 150 gold |
40 s | 138.46 food 115.38 gold |
30.77 s | |
| 90 food 40 gold |
25 s | 69.23 food 30.77 gold |
19.23 s | |
| 80 food 10 wood |
17 s | 61.54 food 7.69 wood |
13.08 s | |
| 250 wood 100 gold |
30 s | 192.31 wood 76.92 gold |
23.08 s |
- The adjusted values are values the unit spawned is considered along with the ones produced, so that we can average out the cost for a large group of units.
In reality, one will produce a mix of units. So producing a group of Limitanei and a singular Cataphract may spawn a Cataphract producing very high value, or producing a group of Cataphracts and a singular Limitanei may spawn a Limitanei producing low value.

Trivia[]
- Based on in-game files, the Palatine School was originally called the 'Western Mercenary House', while the Foreign Engineering Company was called the 'Eastern Mercenary House'. This could explain why their designs are very similar, and both their purposes may originally have been to hire mercenaries, but from different regions.
