Tactics[]
Oyumis are similar to the Norse Ballista and the Chinese Siege Crossbow, but geared more towards an anti-personnel role, with the anti-building role delegated to Onmyōjis. Oyumis have high pierce armor and deal pass-through damage, like the Scorpion in Age of Empires II, making them highly effective against typically massed units, slow units, or units dealing pierce damage, such as infantry, ranged soldiers, and Priests. As it has no minimum range, it is more effective at dealing with melee units than are most siege weapons.
History[]
| “ | The oyumi is a large siege crossbow that first came into use in Japan during the 7th century. Initially fixed to a platform and unable to rotate, it was upgraded in the 9th century to allow greater mobility and the ability to fire multiple arrows simultaneously. Though deadly, the oyumi was difficult to operate – only the strongest and most skilled soldiers could handle this formidable weapon. Historical evidence suggests that these siege engines were used well into the 12th century. | ” |
