The Outpost is a defensive structure in Age of Empires IV available starting in the Dark Age. It possesses extensive line of sight. Each can be upgraded with a single weaponry emplacement, allowing it to fire without garrisoned units, and a defensive emplacement which adds 1,000 hit points and 5 fire armor for 100 stone after 30 seconds. The Rus have the unique Wooden Fortress instead of the Outpost.

Civilization bonuses
- English: Outposts provide the Network of Castles bonus, increasing the attack speed of nearby units by 25% when enemies are detected.
- Chinese: Outposts can automatically repair nearby damaged Stone Walls with the Extra Materials (Keep) upgrade.
- Mongols: Outposts provide the Yam Aura ability, granting nearby friendly Traders and cavalry units a 15% movement speed bonus. This bonus is maintained for 20 seconds after leaving the vicinity of the Outpost.
- Holy Roman Empire: Outpost emplacements are 25% cheaper.
- Holy Roman Empire: An outpost with a garrisoned Relic has +50% armor, +35% damage, +25% sight range, and +20% weapon range.
