This article is about the unit in Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear. For the unit in Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend, see Onna-Musha (Age of Empires IV).

Powerful infantry hero. Good against myth units.
—In-game description

The Onna-musha is a melee hero infantry unit in Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear. Available to the Japanese at the Dojo in the Classical Age, the Onna-musha is a powerful warrior whose special ability periodically inflicts heavy damage to an enemy target.

She benefits from unit upgrades at the Dojo, but not from Age-up bonuses.

Special ability[]

  • Sacred Hands (Passive): Can pick up Relics and deposit them at a Temple.
  • Naginatajutsu (Charged): Periodically deals immense damage. (After 2.5 seconds delay deals 40 Hack Attack hack to target enemy unit (6× vs. myth units). Recharge time: 30 seconds)
  • Passively generate 0.5 XP per second for Bushidō at all times.
  • Generate 1.5× the hit points damage inflicted on enemy units as Bushidō XP.

Tactics[]

The Onna-musha is a strong but expensive Classical Age infantry hero whose Naginatajutsu attack allows her to periodically deal immense amounts of damage, especially against myth units. This makes her crucial in warding off enemy myth units and picking up Relics early on, although due to her high resource and population costs, losing a single Onna-musha in the early game is quite dangerous. In general combat, the Onna-musha is decent against most human units and heroes, but her low pierce armor makes her a prime target for ranged soldiers. Counter-infantry units like the Hypaspist and Axeman will also easily defeat her. Due to the Onna-musha's high cost, it may be preferable earlier on to instead employ the Bushi, who is cheaper, requires slightly less population, and can also take on enemy myth units from a distance, and wait until there are enough resources before producing Onna-mushas.

There are several god bonuses and myth technologies that serve to improve Onna-mushas. Amaterasu arguably has the strongest Onna-mushas, as not only do they generate quadruple the Bushidō XP (2 XP per second) outside of combat and passively regenerate hit points (doubled rate in combat), but she also provides access to several minor gods that can further improve Onna-mushas to maximize their potential. The first is Ame-no-Uzume, whose Katagi technology boosts all infantry units' hit points, including Onna-mushas, and allows them to generate 75 Bushidō XP upon death. The second is Hachiman, who provides two upgrades: Golden Kite makes Onna-musha stronger, especially against myth units; and Eight Banners allows them to be trained faster and regenerate their hit points. The third is Raijin, whose Hannya Mask technology also boosts the Onna-mushas' hit points and grants them a Lifesteal effect in battle. Finally, Takemikazuchi grants Onna-mushas more hit points and bonus damage versus buildings with his Sumo Training technology.

Alternatively, Susanoo allows his Onna-mushas to use their Naginatajutsu ability more often. However, while he does not have Ame-no-Uzume and Hachiman in his minor god roster, he does have Raijin and Takemikazuchi in his minor god roster. Therefore, his Onna-mushas can be enhanced with a faster ability recharge speed, higher hit points, a Lifesteal effect in battle, and higher bonus damage versus buildings.

Changelog[]

Heavenly Spear[]

  • Its favor cost is 2 and pierce armor is 20%. It generates twice the hit point damage dealt to enemy units as Bushidō XP.
  • With update 18.52475, its favor cost is 4, pierce armor is 15%, and it generates 1.5× the hit point damage dealt to enemy units as Bushidō XP.

In-game dialogue[]

History[]

The onna-musha were an elite class of warrior women in feudal Japan. They were skilled in archery, horseback riding, and martial arts. One of the most famous onna-musha in history was Tomoe Gozen, who was born in 1157 CE and, according to some rumors, lived to be ninety years old. Stories tell of her fearlessness, ability to lead others on the battlefield, and her significant role in the Genpei War. In one particularly famous battle, when her leader Yoshinaka was mortally wounded, Tomoe rode out and beheaded Onda no Hachiro Morishige before escaping the battlefield.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike other heroes in the game, the Onna-musha's model changes with her unit-line upgrades (but not with Armory technologies). Another such unit is the Daimyo, but only his weapon changes this way while the rest of the model remains the same.
