Devastating sorcerer hero capable of powerful magic. Strong against buildings and myth units. Can heal allies.
—In-game description

The Onmyōji (陰陽師) is a ranged hero in Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear, available to the Japanese at the Castle in the Mythic Age. He throws balls of magical blue fire which deal crush and divine damage, effective against buildings and myth units, although he does not outrange defensive buildings. He can also heal friendly units.

Special ability[]

  • Sacred Hands (Passive): Can pick up Relics and deposit them at a Temple.
  • Heal (Active, automatic): Heal an injured allied unit.

Tactics[]

Onmyōji differ from other Mythic Age siege units in that they serve as both anti-building and anti-myth unit specialists that can also provide healing to allies, making them fantastic support units. However, at 250 gold and 5 favor and 120 base hit points, the Onmyōji is very expensive and quite fragile, so he does not perform well against human soldiers or stationary defenses thanks to his relatively low pierce armor compared to units like the Helepolis. His damage output against myth units is also not nearly as high as the other Japanese heroes unless he can hit multiple myth units simultaneously with his splash damage or he is tasked to target Rock Giants, which have lower crush armor than other myth units. As a ranged hero, he can effectively take on flying units like the Qinglong and Nidhogg, especially if accompanied by other Onmyōji and Bushis.

Tsukuyomi players can get the most out of their Onmyōji by worshipping Hachiman in the Heroic Age to provide higher attack, especially against myth units, faster training time, and health regeneration; and then Watatsumi in the Mythic Age to further increase attack.

In-game dialogue[]

History[]

An Onmyōji is a practitioner of Onmyōdō, a form of magic associated with fortune-telling and divination. They were employed by the noble class to provide advice and guidance on matters such as battle plans, marriage prospects, political decisions, and more. Beyond their divination skills, Onmyōji were repositories of knowledge in areas such as Japanese folklore, astrological calendars, the philosophy of yin and yang, and the five elements.

Onmyōji were highly valued in the various courts of the shoguns and held considerable influence during the feudal period. Perhaps the most famous Onmyōji was Abe-no-Seimei (921–1005 CE), who lived during the Heian period.

Trivia[]

  • The shikigami (式神) mentioned in the Onmyōji's attack lines is a familiar spirit used by Onmyōji sorcerers as assistants.
