Hero. Good against everything, but especially myth units. Switches to a ranged attack to fight flying myth units. Collects Relics. Nezha's combat ability increases through the Ages.
—In-game description

Nezha (哪吒) is a Chinese demigod hero in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars, exclusive to Fuxi, and is available in the Classical Age at the Imperial Academy. He is based on the popular hero and deity in Chinese folklore, popularised through the novel Fengshen Yanyi, The Investiture of the Gods. He becomes more powerful in every subsequent Age, which is represented by the aging of his body: he starts as a young child in the Classical Age, becomes a youth in the Heroic Age, and finally matures into an adult in the Mythic Age, also becoming capable of moving over water.

Nezha's training cost increases across the Ages, being the only unit in the game to do so.

Special abilities[]

  • Sacred Hands (Passive): Can pick up Relics and deposit them at a Temple.
  • Switch Weapon (Toggleable to other variant, lost in Mythic Age): Switch to Nezha's Fire-Tipped Spear to attack at close range. Attacks ignite enemies, inflicting damage over time. (Nezha starts with the Fire-Tipped Spear weapon in the Classical Age)
  • Switch Weapon (Toggleable to other variant, requires Heroic Age, lost in Mythic Age): Switch to Nezha's Universe Ring to attack at range. Attacks slow and paralyze enemy units. (Applies 15% snare for 0.5 seconds)
  • Wind Fire Wheels (Passive, requires Mythic Age): Leaves a trail of fire that damages enemy units. (While Nezha moves, fire hazard remains behind for 4 seconds which does 2 Divine Attack divine per second to enemies in 1.5 range, damages units as well as buildings despite what the ability description says. Even if Nezha is not moving, the fire hazard is created if Nezha is fighting something while standing in a spot, but it is not created if Nezha is in No Attack stance and not fighting)
  • Universe Ring (Passive, requires Mythic Age): Universe Ring automatically attacks enemies in range. Attacks slow down and paralyze enemy units. (See the Universe Ring section below for details)
  • (Passive, requires Mythic Age) Can move over both land and water.

Strategy[]

As Nezha's cost increases across the Ages, with the non-favor part doubling and then tripling in the Heroic and Mythic Age, the cheapest way to obtain the final form is to train him while Aging up from the Classical to the Heroic Age, as Nezha's form upgrades for free upon Aging up. After he dies, the player will have to pay the new increased cost to retrain him, however.

Universe Ring[]

One of Nezha's celestial weapons. Automatically attacks enemies at range.
—In-game description

The Universe Ring is a distinct invulnerable unit which follows the adult Nezha around. It cannot be selected or commanded by the player, but automatically attacks enemies within its search radius. It is not spawned if Nezha was upgraded from a previous form upon advancing to the Mythic Age, but only if Nezha was trained (or retrained if killed) in the Mythic Age. If Nezha is not in Stand Ground or No Attack stance, it will attack enemies in range even while Nezha is moving or targeting another enemy. Since the adult Nezha loses the ability to toggle to a ranged attack, he cannot directly attack flying units anymore, but the Universe Ring automatically attacks enemy units within its search radius, including flying ones.

If Nezha is in Stand Ground and not targeting any enemy, his Universe Ring does not attack any target even if they are in range, unlike other ranged units which do. It will attack any target that Nezha is currently targeting no matter his stance. When Nezha is standing still, it will automatically start to wander away to find and attack enemies.

As it is invulnerable, it cannot be targeted by individual-target abilities or god powers, nor is it affected by most area ones. The Universe Ring unit can be stunned by Li Jing's ability, but cannot be stunned by Shockwave. Unlike other ranged units, its attack snares enemy units. Targets struck by it gain a short electric shock VFX.

Nezha is a famous protection deity in Chinese folk religion, often depicted as a flying youth standing on Wind Fire Wheels, wielding a red-tasseled spear, and adorned with a celestial scarf known as the Red Armillary Sash.

In the 16th-century Chinese novel "The Investiture of the Gods", Nezha is the son of Li Jing, another protection deity. After a confrontation with the Eastern Sea Dragon King, Nezha sacrifices himself. Later, a deity revives him using lotus flowers to create a new body and grants him numerous divine weapons.

Although Nezha experiences conflicts with his father, Li Jing, in folk legends, they are often portrayed fighting side by side to vanquish the enemies of the heavens.

Trivia[]

  • Nezha was previously referenced in Tale of the Dragon by Ao Kuang's myth technology Nezha's Defeat.
  • In a formation with various units, child Nezha takes the frontline, while youth Nezha takes the backline with the ranged units, despite being toggled to his melee weapon by default. The adult Nezha, being an amphibious unit like the Xuanwu, does not take any position in a formation on either land or water.
  • The AI does not turn Nezha (Youth) to its ranged version to attack faraway or flying enemies.
  • The Universe Ring can be placed as a distinct unit in the Scenario Editor. This Universe Ring can be controlled, but can only be selected with idle hero or idle military keys, and not by clicking on it. This Universe Ring cannot attack while it is moving.
  • While the Universe Ring is not defined as a flying unit, its movement type is set as air, letting it phase through any obstacles, units, or buildings, and move over cliffs and water.
  • The order of the treasures obtained by Nezha in game is incorrect with respect to the description in Fengshen Yanyi, where he starts out with the ring and sash as an infant, then is given the spear, wheels, golden tile, and leopard skin bag as a revived youth, and after obtaining the ability to assume his three-headed eight-armed divine form is given the fire dragon bell cover and the yin yang swords. Unlike his in-game adult version, he never used an halberd, but always stuck to the spear.
  • The silken sash Nezha wears showcases the color of the player, while in the novel it is described as red (even compared to a ring of flames at one point) and used as a whip-like weapon.
