Tactics[]
Naginata Riders are the first cavalry unit available to the Japanese, trained from the Classical Age. They are fast and can easily eliminate ranged soldiers and siege engines, as well as some infantry units. While having a slightly lower base attack and hit points than the Greek Hippeus, Naginata Riders have a higher damage bonus versus ranged soldiers and have slightly better hack and pierce armor while also costing slightly less gold. As with all other cavalry units, Naginata Riders are weak versus standard infantry and especially counter-cavalry units like the Prodromos and Ge Halberdier.
Tsukuyomi has the greatest use for Naginata Riders thanks to his Bushidō bonus boosting cavalry attack per Bushidō tier unlocked, as well as his minor god roster granting several minor gods that grant improvements to Naginata Riders. The first of these is Inari Ōkami, whose Sashimono Bannermen technology boosts Naginata Riders' hit points and grants them bonus damage versus other cavalry units. The second is Fūjin, who grants the Gale's Fury technology that increases movement and attack speed for Naginata Riders. Lastly, Ōkuninushi's Divine Prefecture reduces the training time of Naginata Riders. A common early-game strategy involves reaching the Classical Age with Inari Ōkami, researching Sashimono Bannermen while training several Naginata Riders, and then supplementing them with a Kitsune to boost their movement speed as they are sent to attack an enemy.
History[]
| “ | Wielding the fearsome and iconic naginata, this rider pays tribute to one of Japan's most distinctive weapons, highly valued by the samurai class. Sometimes mistakenly referred to as a halberd, the naginata features a wickedly sharp, three-foot-long curved blade affixed to a wooden shaft. Because it could be used for both cutting and thrusting – and offered the warrior a wide range of attack – the naginata was favored by both cavalry and infantry. It became so effective in combat that some scholars believe Japanese armor evolved in response, incorporating stronger protection for the lower body and legs to defend against its sweeping strikes. | ” |
