Strategy[]
Prior to Retold, Myrmidons have attack bonuses against all non-Greek human soldiers and are very dangerous in close quarters. Most infantry and cavalry units will not be able to stand against them. However, Myrmidons do not get a bonus against counter-infantry, so they are just as vulnerable to them as other infantrymen. Otherwise, players can counter them with stronger myth units or attack at a distance with archers. In The Titans, the population cost for Myrmidons is increased from 2 to 3, though they are still superior to Hoplites in almost every way. If Beast Slayer is researched, Myrmidons gain additional damage against myth units as well. Also, as human soldiers, they fight well against heroes. Against Greek opponents, they are of course rather ordinary.
In Retold, the Myrmidons have been drastically modified. Instead of their original bonus, their attacks now ignore standard armor values. While they remain vulnerable against counter-infantry and do not have bonus damage against any units, they are far more potent against units with heavy armor and can be massed more easily with Hera's Argive Patronage technology. Worshipping Athena, Dionysus, and lastly Hephaestus provides the most upgrades to the Myrmidons' combat potential, with Athena boosting pierce armor, Dionysus boosting hit points, and Hephaestus providing extra damage, especially against myth units.

History[]
| “ | Myrmidons deal divine damage, which ignores standard armor values. This makes them effective against anything they can reach in battle. When the island of Aegina was decimated by a plague, its king Aeacus prayed to Zeus for help repopulating his kingdom. Zeus transformed the island's ants into people, thus creating the Myrmidons. They later followed Achilles to the Trojan War and were notorious for pitilessly carrying out orders, no matter how cruel. Today the word has come to mean a subordinate who carries out orders without question. |
