—In-game description prior to Retold |
The Mummy is an undead Egyptian ranged myth unit in Age of Mythology. It is available to worshipers of Osiris.
Special ability[]

A Mummy converting an enemy Hoplite into a Minion.
Reincarnation (Charged): Inflicts a curse on human or non-Titan myth units in the targeted area (Area of Effect of 2 with a range of 12) for 15 seconds, dealing 2
pierce damage instantly and 3
divine damage per second over the duration, for a total of 45
divine damage (2× vs. myth units, 0.25× vs. heroes). If the target dies within the curse's duration, they are shortly resurrected as a Minion under the player's control afterwards. Recharge time: 18 seconds.
- Before Retold, the ability kills the target human or myth unit (but not a Titan or Qilin (Tale of the Dragon version)), instantly replacing it with a Minion under the player's control. Recharge time: 20 seconds.
Lifesteal (Passive, requires
Crimson Linen): Regenerates hit points equal to 20% of damage dealt. (since Retold)

Strategy[]
The Mummy has 450 hit points, 30 pierce attack, takes up 4 population slots, and costs wood, a resource the Egyptians are not as dependent on compared to other civilizations. While it may not seem particularly powerful for a Mythic Age myth unit, its special ability makes it truly fearsome - when spotting an enemy, the Mummy exhales a black cloud of insects and death, inflicting a curse on all targets in its line of attack and in a small area that causes them to return as Minions under the player's control shortly after dying within the 15 second duration of the curse. Furthermore, the curse deals unblockable divine damage over time up to a maximum of 45 damage (doubled against myth units), which makes worker units incredibly unlikely to survive once they are cursed.
In comparison to the original game, the Retold iteration of the Mummy does not require as much micromanagement as before, as its special attack can now affect multiple enemy human or myth units within its area and damage them over time. When supplemented by powerful human soldiers and Priests, and especially the Son of Osiris, Mummies in groups can cause entire armies to be reincarnated as Minions under their control while any surviving units get worn down by the player's human soldiers and heroes. This effect can be maximized if used on a large cluster of human soldiers when the Mummies are micromanaged to move them away from dangerous threats, commonly in the form of heroes. Overall, this makes Mummies more effective than before, especially considering the lowered difficulty of massing them with the lowered population cost and the greatly increased Favor limit. On the other hand, Mummies should still be protected against enemy Heroes who will slay them with ease, as well as stronger myth units, namely Medusai who can easily petrify Mummies for extreme damage. Isis players who chose Nephthys for the Heroic Age can invoke Ancestors to create an even larger army of Minions in addition to the existing ones already created by the Mummies.
The following units are unaffected by the curse ability:
The curse ability affects all other land and flying units, as well as naval myth units, Caravans, and Phoenix Eggs. A daring player can send a few Mummies to a group of enemy villagers gathered around Gold Mines away from the safety of their main base, curse them, and allow them to return as Minions under the Mummies' control. If the villagers are clustered together, most, if not all, of them will be cursed. The subsequent Minions can then further wreck the enemy's economy by killing any surviving villagers.
The Mummy may at first glance seem weak - it has a mere 12 pierce attack and is rather fragile with only 350 hit points, expensive, and takes up 5 population slots. However, its value comes from its truly mighty special attack - when spotting an enemy, a Mummy will exhale a black cloud of insects and death, instantly eliminating the unit targeted. The dead unit automatically returns as an undead Minion under the player's control. Though this minion has a short lifespan, it will fight until its lifespan runs out or it is killed.
As with other instant-kill units, the Mummy is most effective when its special attack is micromanaged to slay the strongest and most expensive units on an enemy force, especially dangerous units like the Colossus, Argus, Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, and Mountain Giant. The special attack also works on naval myth units like the Kraken or Dragon Turtle, although the Minions will be stuck in the water as a result. Due to their high population and favor cost (especially before The Titans), Mummies are hard to mass. As with all myth units, they are weak against Heroes, who will eliminate them without much issue. Isis players who chose Nephthys for the Heroic Age can invoke Ancestors to create an even larger army of Minions in addition to the existing ones already created by the Mummies.Changelog[]
Age of Mythology[]
- Mummies cost 200 gold, 35 favor, take 5 population slots, have 350 hit points, 12 pierce attack with a 0.5× multiplier vs. heroes, and 18 Line of Sight. Their special attack has a cooldown of 25 seconds and instantly kills the targeted unit (except heroes, Titans, and ships), causing them to return as a Minion under the player's control. However, it cannot affect Caravans.
The Titans[]
- Mummies cost 200 gold, 25 favor and have a 3× multiplier vs. myth units and 0.25× vs. heroes. Their special attack has a cooldown of 20 seconds.
Retold[]
- Mummies cost 275 wood, 25 favor, take 4 population slots, have 450 hit points, 30 pierce attack, and 16 Line of Sight.
- Their special attack no longer functions as an instant-kill attack; instead, it curses enemy units (except Heroes, Titans, and ships) within a small radius and causes them to return as Minions under the player's control shortly after being killed within the curse's 15 second duration. The special attack has a cooldown of 10 seconds, deals 2
pierce damage instantly and 4
divine damage per second over a duration of 15 seconds. Both damage types have a 2× multiplier vs. myth units and 0.25× vs. heroes, and can be used against Caravans.
- Now sports a unique model when upgraded with Atef Crown.
- Mummies gain +100% hit points, +100% attack, and +20% speed in the Wonder Age.
- With update 17.64528, their special attack deals 3
divine per second up to a maximum of 45
divine and takes 18 seconds to recharge.

Trivia[]
- If a Mummy attempts to convert the Carcinos into a Minion, the Minion will die instantly due to the crab spewing blood that causes Area of Effect damage upon its death. This is not the case in Retold, where the Carcinos' death explosion deals significantly less damage and the Minion rises shortly after the Carcinos' death instead of immediately after, so it subsequently takes no damage from the Carcinos' death explosion.
- Before Retold, converting a Scarab, Terracotta Warrior, or a Lampades upgraded with Asper Blood will damage a Minion but not kill it.
- Curiously, most non-humanoid units will still resurrect as the humanoid Minion once cursed by the Mummy and slain.
- In The Titans, the developers accidentally gave Hippolyta the 'LogicalTypeMummyMinionTarget' tag, which allowed her to be killed by a Mummy's special attack. This was fixed with patch 1.9.
