| This article is about the cavalry units in Age of Empires. For cavalry in other games of the series, see Cavalry. |
Mounted units in Age of Empires are soldiers which fight using mounts, like horses and camels.
Types[]
Mounted units can be split into two different sections:
- mounted archers - which have range, deal pierce attack, and are trained at the Archery Range.
- (melee) cavalry - which do not have range, deal melee attack, and are trained at the Stable.

Mounts[]
The four main types of mounts used, and the prominent civilizations are:
| Mount | Units | Civilizations |
|---|---|---|
| Horse | ||
| Chariot | ||
| Elephant | ||
| Camel |
Technologies[]
Since cavalry and mounted archers are upgraded differently, their upgrades are shown in their respective sections. They have only one common upgrade:
Nobility (Government Center, Bronze Age) - Non-elephant mounted units get +15% hit points.
Civilization bonuses[]
Babylonians: Chariot units have +1 pierce armor.
Carthaginians: Elephant units have +25% hit points. Camel Riders have +15% hit points.
Egyptians: Chariot units have +33% hit points.
Lac Viet: Mounted units are trained 25% faster.
Palmyrans: Camel Riders move 25% faster.
Persians: Elephant units move 25% faster.
Phoenicians: Elephant units are 25% cheaper.
Sumerians: Camel Riders have +1 pierce armor.
Yamato: Mounted units are 15% cheaper.
Team bonuses[]
Palmyrans: Technologies that benefit mounted units are researched 30% faster.
Persians: Cavalry units are created and upgraded 20% faster.
Phoenicians: Mounted archers have +2 Line of Sight.
Yamato: Stables and Archery Ranges are 33% cheaper.
Armor class[]
Mounted units have their own armor class dictating which sources they take attack bonuses from.
- Units
Cavalry -
Heavy Cavalry -
Cataphract
Chariot Archer (+4)
Horse Archer -
Heavy Horse Archer
Scout
Elephant Archer
War Elephant (+4) -
Armored Elephant (+4)
Chariot (+4) -
Scythe Chariot (+4)
- Attack bonuses
Axeman - +4
Camel Rider - +8
Implications[]
The armor value of +4 of elephant and chariot units mean that they resist 4 anti-mounted attacks. This means that the attack bonus of Axemen is reduced to 0, and that of Camel Riders is reduced to +4, that is half.
