Khitan unique Siege Cavalry with long range, but cannot attack at close range. Projectiles leave lingering fire on the ground.
—In-game description

The Mounted Trebuchet is the second unique unit of the Khitans in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - The Three Kingdoms. It is a camel cavalry siege unit with a long-lasting area damage attack. It can be trained at the Siege Workshop once the Imperial Age is reached. It has no Elite upgrade. The unit is functionally similar to a Bombard Cannon, despite being a Trebuchet. Unlike the Trebuchet and like the Bombard Cannon, they prioritize attacking enemy units over buildings.

Ability[]

Mounted Trebuchet lingering fire demo

The lingering fire area hazard left behind by the Mounted Trebuchet's projectile

On impact, its projectiles create a patch of fire that lasts for 8 seconds, dealing 2 damage per second to any enemy unit and 4 damage per second to any enemy building in a 0.65 tile radius.[note 1] The fire damage ignores armor, but does not stack if multiple Mounted Trebuchet projectiles land on the same area.

Trivia[]

  • The Mounted Trebuchet is specifically excluded from gaining melee attack from the Forging line of technologies, despite being a cavalry unit dealing melee attack.
  • Mounted Trebuchets do not benefit from Ordo Cavalry either, because they do not have the properties defined which help other cavalry units benefit from the technology.
  • If the Mounted Trebuchet is given to a civilization with Bloodlines via the Scenario Editor, it will gain +20 hit points.
  • Enemy AI units do not try to dodge the projectiles of Mounted Trebuchets, unlike other similar siege units like Trebuchets, the Bombard Cannon line, the Mangonel line, etc. This is because it is a projectile melee cavalry, like the Mameluke, and not a siege weapon.
  • Despite being a camel unit, it is not affected by the Gurjara and Hindustani team bonuses, Maghrebi Camels, and Zealotry.

Notes[]

  1. Technically the projectiles linger a fire-like structure which has an aura effect to reduce regeneration rate of units and buildings by 120 and 240 hit points per second. The fire-like structure has a lifespan of 8 seconds.
