The Mounted Samurai is a unique heavy melee cavalry unit of the Japanese in Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend that replaces the Lancer. It can be created at the Stable starting in the Castle Age. It uses a katana as its main weapon, and a naginata as its charging weapon.
Ability[]
- Deflective Armor (passive): Blocks one melee or ranged attack, recharges in eight seconds when out of combat.
Unit comparison[]
The Mounted Samurai costs 10 gold more than the Lancer, and has the Deflective Armor ability. However, more differences come in when looking at the Japanese as a whole. The Uma Bannerman can boost the Mounted Samurai. The Japanese have an extra attack technology for melee attacks in the Dark Age.
Tactics[]
The heavy cavalry units (Knight, Lancer, Mounted Samurai, and Royal Knight) have the dangerous combination of strength and speed. They have the second highest brute force in melee combat, only after the Elephant units. However, unlike the Elephants, they are much more mobile. So unless attack bonuses are involved, they win every fight with brute force. Sensing unfavourable fights, they can run away too. This makes Camel Riders their only true counter. A group of them can easily devastate an unprepared/unprotected town and run away as soon as the counter-army reaches. Their main downside is that being such strong units, they have an expensive cost attached.
In addition, the Mounted Samurai have a special ability to block one attack with an eight second cooldown which starts when they are out of combat. It makes only a minor differece against Archers and Horsemen, but can be critical when facing high damage units, like siege engines and Handcannoneers.
