This article is about the unit in the PC game. For the unit in the handheld video game, see Mountain Giant (Age of Empires: Mythologies).

ā€œ Myth unit. A massive thug who crushes smaller units and smashes buildings with his club. ā€
—In-game description

The Mountain Giant is a Norse myth unit available once the player's civilization worships Njord at the Heroic Age, or Hel in the Mythic Age.

In Retold, a Mountain Giant and a Football are spawned by the cheat code FOOTY.

Special abilities[]

  • Bludgeon (Charged): Crushes enemy buildings with its club, dealing 360 crush damage. Recharge time: 40 seconds.
  • Dwarven Punt (Charged): Kicks Dwarves into enemy units or buildings, dealing 100 hack damage to nearby enemy dwarf and knocking him back. In Retold, this ability exists but is not used. Mountain Giants can simply use this as a regular attack. Recharge time: 40 seconds.
  • Punt (Charged, requires Jotuns): Kicks human soldiers into enemy units or buildings, dealing 500 hack damage to a nearby enemy human unit and knocking it back. Recharge time: 40 seconds. (Since Retold)
  • Nature's Eyes (Passive, requires Eyes in the Forest): Animals and natural objects within the unit's Line of Sight reveal their surroundings (30-tile radius) for 6 seconds. (since Retold)

Strategy[]

The Mountain Giant wields a large club and deals high damage to buildings, serving as a myth unit stand-in for siege weapons. Giants can be used effectively against almost any unit and have a large amount of hit points to compensate for their low armor. The Mountain Giant's first special attack is a super shot from his club which deals 120 crush damage to buildings and aiding to take down enemy fortifications. His second special attack is used only against Dwarves - he punts them. However, like all myth units, he is weak against heroes. Furthermore, his low movement and attack speed, along with his low armor, means that he should be provided adequate support and protected from faster, stronger myth units like the Medusa, Mummy, Frost Giant, Argus, or Lampades. These myth units in particular can either instantly kill him, put him out of action, or even turn him against his former allies. His slow movement speed also makes him a target of Azure Dragons and White Tigers, the latter of which can easily close the distance and heavily damage the Mountain Giant at the same time with their leaping attack.

Mythology[]

ā€œ Scientific name -- Gigans bergrisi
Size -- 16' tall
Diet -- rocks, trees, sheep, humans

The mountain giants, also known as bergrisar, were known for their great strength and stupidity. They were antagonistic and destructive, and like other jotuns represented untamed forces of nature. Remarkably, several giantesses (who were perhaps not as bestial as the males of their species) had trysts with some of the Norse gods.

Some of the more notable giants included Thor's enemy Hrungnir, whose head and heart were made of stone - and who fell upon Thor when slain, Gerdr, a giantess who married Freyr (Freyja's brother), the nameless mason who built the walls around Asgard in six months on a bet (and was also killed by Thor), and Gunnlod, a giantess with whom Odin had to sleep for three nights before he could drink her father's mead.

The giants, also known as jotun, were known for their great strength and stupidity. They were antagonistic and destructive. Remarkably, several of the giantesses (who were perhaps not as bestial as the males of their species) had trysts with some of the Norse gods. Thor, Odin, Tyr and Heimdall had a giant for a parent. Both of Loki's parents were giants, yet he was still considered an Aesir god.

Some of the more colorful giants included Hrungnir, whose head and heart were made of stone (and pinned Thor when the Thunderer killed him), Gerd, a giantess who married Freyr (Freyja's brother), Hrimthurs, who built the walls around Asgard in six months on a bet (and was also killed by Thor), and Gunnlod, a giantess who Odin had to sleep with for three nights before he could drink her father's mead.

Trivia[]

  • Mountain Giants are the only myth units to be available to two consecutive minor gods; under the worship of Loki, they are available to Njord in the Heroic Age and again to Hel in the Mythic Age.
    • They and Frost Giants are both available to two different minor gods, though it is not possible to worship both Skadi and Hel at the same time.
  • Mountain Giants are the only Norse Giants to not be available to all three Norse major gods in the original game.
  • Mountain Giants have the highest number of hit points of any myth unit that can be trained from a Temple in the original game.
