The Monkey is an animal in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology.
Age of Empires II[]
The Monkey was introduced in update 141935 of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. It is a timid decorative animal which contains no food. It reuses the model of Furious the Monkey Boy.
While it is named Monkey, the animal is a chimpanzee, which is an ape and not usually referred to as a monkey.
Age of Mythology[]
“ | Villagers can hunt wild animals for Food. | ” |
—In-game description |
“ | This animal can be hunted, but provides little Food. | ” |
—In-game description |
The Monkey is a wild animal in Age of Mythology that can be hunted for food. It does not provide much food, but it also does not fight back, and it is a faster food source than farming or berry gathering. It is available on Egyptian maps. It has the exact same stats as the Baboon.
The Monkey Head Relic provides the player with three Relic Monkeys that will fight for them and respawn after being killed.

History[]
“ | Scientific name -- Cercopithecus aethiops Size -- 6-17 lbs. Diet -- fruit, flowers, leaves, seeds Few monkeys lived near the Nile, but some were imported from deserts in North Africa. Vervet monkeys live throughout Africa, but prefer drier environments such as savannahs to actual rain forests, but rarely stray far from a source of water or from trees. Vervets are diurnal and gregarious. Rank order within a family is maintained by threat displays, such as eyelid gestures. Wealthy Egyptians kept vervets or tail-less Barbary macaques as pets. Some were even mummified and buried. Age of Mythology monkeys have an unprecedented affinity for building rafts and starting fires. |

Trivia[]
- The history section hints that they are vervet monkeys, but in reality they are grivets, a species native to the Horn of Africa and the southern parts of the Nile. However, the grivet was considered part of the vervet monkey species at the time of the game's release.
- The updated icon for monkeys in Retold is more similar to a macaque than a vervet or grivet.
- Monkeys are a reoccurring Easter egg in Age of Mythology.
- Lead designer Bruce Shelley at AGDC 2001 said that they added Monkeys due to how similar they are to game developers.
- Their "affinity for building rafts" in their history file is a comical reference to the Monkey Raft.
- Monkeys appear in some levels in the campaign, one notably appears on the small island in Omens.
- Before Retold, using the cheat code
I WANT TEH MONKEYS!!!1!
will spawn 100 Monkeys at the player's Town Center. In Retold, these were replaced by Monkeys of Set.
