Early Mongols believed in the magic of their shamans to manipulate the weather. Prior to battle, the shaman would place rocks known as "rain stones" into water. When a powerful rainstorm did appear and scatter the enemy, it seemed to confirm the shaman's work. The Mongols could then pick their moment to strike at a confounded enemy.
