Minor gods preview

Six of the minor gods: Athena, Ares, Anubis, Skadi, Prometheus and Houtu.

Minor gods are gods available for selection upon advancing Ages in Age of Mythology. There is always a choice between two minor gods, depending on which major god the player worships. There are at least three minor gods in total for each age for each civilization, often evenly distributed so that every major god has a different pair and one missing (except for one Mythic Age minor god, two before Retold), and Hera being exclusive to Zeus (Greeks). Consequently, Hephaestus is available to all Greeks and Tyr is available to all Norse. Before Retold, Hel was also exclusive to Loki (Norse).

Every minor god grants the player access to unique myth units (typically one land unit or a land and a naval unit) and technologies, as well as a new god power. Unlike major gods, they do not provide any inherent bonuses. With the exception of the god power, all their benefits require favor to use (either to research their technologies or to summon their unique myth units).

Trivia[]

  • Minor gods were added fairly late into Age of Mythology's development cycle (circa early-2002), with many myth units and god powers being dependent on major god choice.
    • Originally, when minor gods were added, they only provided a myth unit and a god power - instead of technologies, they would simply provide an automatic 'bonus' similar to the major god bonuses.
