The Migdol Stronghold (or simply Migdol) is the Castle-type building for the Egyptians in Age of Mythology. It is cheaper and stronger than the Greek Fortress, the Norse Hill Fort, the Atlantean Palace and the Chinese Castle, though it takes considerably longer to build. The Migdol is vital to the Egyptians as it is where their elite units, the Chariot Archer, Camelry, and War Elephant, are trained. It is also where technologies that improve these units are researched. Unlike with the other Castle-type buildings, siege weapons are not trained at the Migdol, but at the Siege Works.

Migdol Strongholds fire multiple arrows at enemies within range, mowing down those with low pierce armor. They can be used to bolster a town's defenses, strengthen a player's claim to a neutral area, or as a forward base. They are, however defenseless against melee attacks unless upgraded with Boiling Oil, and, while formidable at defense, they are not invincible. Siege weapons either outrange them or take little damage from their attacks. In a large enough group, human soldiers can destroy a Migdol, though not without suffering substantial losses.

History[]

Although the ancient Egyptians were largely isolated by expansive deserts, they were still open to attack from the Middle East, the sea, and up the Nile Valley from the south. Where they were vulnerable they built large fortresses. The name Migdol comes from a fortress with attached towers found in northern Egypt near a town thought to have been named Migdol. Other fortresses incorporating similar towers are sometimes characterized as being in the Migdol style.

Trivia[]

  • Migdol is the Egyptian word for tower. It is related to the Hebrew word magdala, from which 'Magdalene' is derived.
