The Mercenary Hoplite is an untrainable infantry unit in Chronicles: Battle for Greece. It is present in campaign scenarios and is available in the Scenario Editor. Like the trainable Hoplite, it increases the nearby armor of nearby Hoplite line units and other Mercenary Hoplites within two tiles by +1. It also has a charged attack like the Sakan Axeman and Ekdromos.
Ability[]
- Charge attack: It has +6 charged attack which it recharges over 30 seconds.
- Phalanx: It has an aura radius of two tiles which increases the melee armor of nearby Hoplites, Elite Hoplites, and Mercenary Hoplites by +1.
Campaign appearances[]
Battle for Greece[]
- Greeks Bearing Gifts: Mercenary Hoplites are employed by bandits trying to capture Achaemenid supply carts. Some Mercenary Hoplites are also present in Miletus, among a group of concerned Ionians.
- The Ionian Revolt: Mercenary Hoplites are deployed in towns captured by Aristagoras' troops, alongside that town's standard complement of troops and Polemarchs serving as their leaders.
- A City Ablaze: Mercenary Hoplites participate in the initial assault on the Acropolis of Sardis. Some are also employed in Aristagoras' main camp. The Persians can also train Mercenary Hoplites at the Barracks after securing the coin mints district.
- Death to Traitors: A few bands of Mercenary Hoplites defend Miletus.
- The Battle of Marathon: Mercenary Hoplites guard several recruiting grounds where Themistocles can recruit more troops, including Mercenary Hoplites. Bandits utilize Mercenary Hoplites across Attica. Several regiments of Plataean Hoplites serving under Miltiades are renamed Mercenary Hoplites.
- Raise the Sails: The army protecting the mines of Laurion employs Mercenary Peltasts and Mercenary Hoplites.
- The Hot Gates: Persian land forces at Thermopylae employ Mercenary Hoplites.
- Wrath of the Regent: Mercenary Hoplites defend the city of Byzantium.
- Pyres on the Coast: The Athenian raiding parties include Mercenary Hoplites in their ranks.
- Speeches and Spears: Dium employs Mercenary Hoplites and trains them at the Barracks.
- Blood and Gold: Mercenary Hoplites are employed by Notium, the Milesian Democrats, and the Ionian Towns.
Trivia[]
- While not normally trainable, its internal cost is the same of that of the standard Hoplite.
- It has the same appearance as Lysander's Raider, another Scenario Editor unit.
- The Mercenary Hoplite is equipped with a Corinthian helmet, a muscle cuirass with Persian-style quilted epomydes shoulder pads, an aspix (shield) featuring a gorgon face pattern, and a dory spear.
