The Mercenary is a cavalry unit in Age of Empires that is only available in the Scenario Editor and campaign mode of the game. Its model is identical to the Heavy Cavalry/Cataphract.
It is considered a special unit since it does not have the ability to explore the map and cannot be seen in the map once the unit leaves the Line of Sight of the player. In addition, it can no longer be controlled if the player selects another unit while the Mercenary is out of Line of Sight, so the player will have to lead a unit to where they left the Mercenary to control it again.
Its actual function in the game is unclear, but it may be used where infiltration of enemy fortifications is needed.
It was removed in Return of Rome.
