History[]
“ | Many of North America’s European settlers were groups fleeing religious or political persecution in their European homelands. Particularly in New England, the meeting houses that they constructed initially often filled a dual role as places of worship and centers of administrative function. However, the philosophical Enlightenment greatly changed the relationship between secular and non-secular affairs, with many influential figures advocating for a full separation of Church and State. While certain fanatical religious organizations resisted this initiative, the majority of America accepted it and it became a foundational tenet of the young nation. | ” |
