Map Control is the concept of possessing a military presence on an area of a map. Map control is not something that can be measured with a statistic, but something that is determined by the amount of area a player can maneuver their units or build in safely. Areas that are the most important areas of control are the locations of valuable resources and the bases of a player. A player with little control of the map will struggle to provide an offensive presence.
Map control is usually created by defensive structures, as they are normally hard to take out without dedicated siege units. However, regular units, particularly ranged ones, can provide pressure themselves if an opponent is unable to kill them.
Maps such as Gold Rush put a higher emphasis than normal maps due to the presence of a valuable resource that is required to win. In maps such as these, map control can be a win condition.
Age of Empires II[]
Castles are great at providing map control, thanks to their combination of high offense and mighty durability. Bombard Towers are also great due to their very high damage and relatively lower cost. Early on, Towers can be used for punishing an opponent going for a Fast Castle, as said strategy leaves a player defenseless and unable to prevent Tower pressure.
Certain civilizations have bonuses that aid their ability to control the map:
- Britons: Their extra range on their archers makes them notoriously hard to remove from a position they have taken.
- Bulgarians: The Krepost is great for exerting map control as it functions similarly to a half-price Castle.
- Byzantines: Their extra hit points make their defenses harder to take out, and their unit discounts allow them to produce more counter units.
- Franks: Their -25% stone Castle cost means they can create more than normal.
- Koreans: They recieve all of the tower upgrades for free, and Eupseong gives their towers +2 range.
- Slavs: Detinets means the Slavs can create more Castles and Towers.
- Teutons: Their Imperial Age unique technology, Crenellations, gives their Castles +2 range over a generic Castle (due to a lack of Bracer), which notably allows them to outrange Bombard Cannons.
- Turks: Artillery gives their Bombard Towers +2 range, giving them a higher area of control.
