Mangonel Emplacement is a weapon emplacement in Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend for the Outpost and Keep unique to the Byzantines and available starting in the Castle Age. After upgrading, the structure gains a defensive long-range mangonel attack. It replaces the Springald Emplacement available to other civilizations.
When researched at a Tower within the influence of a Cistern with the Dialecticus ability active, the research speed of this technology is 30% faster per water level at the Cistern.
Comparison[]
| Gold | 75 | 50 |
| Stone | 200 | 125 |
| Attack | 7 (x3) Siege | 40 Ranged |
| RoF | 4.12 | 3.88 |

Compared to a Springald Emplacement, a Mangonel emplacement notably also does area of effect damage. It fires three stones within a 0.75-tile radius spread, and each stone has a 0.875 tile radius area of effect with full damage scaling across the whole area.
Tactics[]
Compared to Springald Emplacements, Mangonel Emplacements trade off range and single-target damage for the capability to deal area-of-effect damage.
As such, Mangonel Emplacements are an excellent defensive option against unit clusters, but perform poorly against single units, even more so since the projectiles are not guaranteed to hit.
Exceptions to this are:
- Units with a large amount of ranged resistance, such as siege engines, since Mangonel Emplacement deal siege damage, ignoring any ranged armor and ranged resistance.
- Ships, which both take bonus damage from Mangonel Emplacements and are more likely to be hit because of their big hitbox.
Mangonel Emplacements benefit massively from the Blacksmith ranged damage upgrades since they have multiple projectiles, furthermore so as they aren't nullified by ranged armor upgrades, since they deal siege damage.
