Age of Empires Series Wiki

Powerful heavy ranged infantry with a deadly heavy attack.
—In-game description

The Maigadi is a heavy infantry unit in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - The African Royals that is unique to the Hausa and can be trained at the Palace. It is an expensive Musketeer with a slightly higher range and a much higher hit points and attack, but lacks a multiplier against cavalry for their melee attack.

The Maigadi is a good complement to Hausa's powerful melee cavalry, but are very difficult to afford in the early stages of the game. They are made more accessible and powerful by sending the "Dane Guns" (increases damage and splits their cost to 100 coin and 100 influence), and "Sarkin Dogarai" (increases attack and gives a small multiplier against cavalry for melee attacks) cards. In addition to being more affordable, Maigadi gains additional hit points and attack in later Ages, making it a good choice for the late game. This is especially the case considering Maigadi only require 1 population, so are able to be trained in large numbers once the resources are available.

The Maigadi is automatically upgraded in every Age starting from the Fortress Age.

The Maigadi (bodyguards) were the personal guards of Hausa emirs. In an ever-shifting and often treacherous political climate, the ability to trust in those nearest to oneself was paramount. Maigadi not only safeguarded the welfare of the emir but also served as a private army of sorts.
