The Macedonians are a European civilization in Chronicles: Alexander the Great. They are based on the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. They focus on infantry and cavalry.
They correspond to the civilization of the same name in Age of Empires.
Characteristics[]
Civilization bonuses[]
- Take 10% less damage from enemies on higher elevation.
- Recruitment Doctrines are available at the Barracks, Archery Range, and Stable.
- Infantry armor upgrades also benefit cavalry.
- Siege weapons have +1 pierce armor and +30% anti-building damage.
Unique units[]
Phalangite: Infantry with additional range but also a minimum range
Companion Cavalry: Cavalry unit that deals bonus damage to unique units
Unique buildings[]
Fortified Outpost: Upgraded Outpost which speeds up units around it and gains a small short-ranged attack
Unique technologies[]
Veteran Chiliarchs: Recruitment Doctrines become 33% more effective.
Ends of the World: Fortified Outposts heal nearby allied units at 30 HP/s.
Pezhetairoi: Phalangite minimum range halved.
Sarissophoroi: Companion Cavalry gain a speed charge attack.
Team bonus[]
- Outposts can be individually upgraded into Fortified Outposts.
Recruitment Doctrines[]
The Macedonians can choose and switch between specific Recruitment Doctrines. The doctrines are:
Balanced Recruitment: Normal production rate and normal cost of units.
Conscript Recruitment: Units cost -15% food and wood (gold cost unchanged), but have +50% training time (-33.33% training speed).
Mercenary Recruitment: Units have -50% training time (+100% training speed), but cost 10% more food and wood.
Doctrine choice is free, instant, and can be made at any Barracks, Archery Range, or Stable, and applies globally to all units trained at the same type of those buildings of the player, i.e., Recruitment Doctrine of all Barracks is separate from Recruitment Doctrine of all Archery Ranges, so they are to be set per building type.
The cost and training time of units is remembered when queued; changing doctrines in between does not change time or cost of previously queued units.

Trivia[]
- The civilization's icon portrays the Star of Vergina, which was possibly the symbol of the Argead dynasty that Alexander the Great belonged to, and one was found on his father Philip II's tomb.
- The same symbol is used for the icon of the equivalent civilization in Return of Rome.
- The Macedonian Wonder resembles certain reconstructions of the Palace of Aigai.
- The Macedonians, alongside the Thracians, are one the first two civilizations in Age of Empires II that have access to Parthian Tactics and Cavalry Archers, but are unable to upgrade their Cavalry Archers to Heavy Cavalry Archers.

Notes[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Macedonian variant of κοίρανος (koírănos), attested in Hesychius' lexicon; more appropriate would be the vocative κόραννε (kóranne)
