Lysimachus is an infantry hero in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Return of Rome. He possesses the model of a Broad Swordsman.

Despite appearing as an opponent player in the first and second scenarios of the Pyrrhus of Epirus campaign, the unit itself does not make an appearance.

History[]

Lysimachus, a prominent figure among the Diadochi, played a significant role in the power struggles that followed the death of Alexander the Great. As one of Alexander's trusted generals, Lysimachus carved out his own domain in the tumultuous Hellenistic period. Lysimachus initially aligned with Antigonus, another Diadochi, against the rival factions. However, their alliance eventually deteriorated into conflict. Lysimachus, seeing an opportunity, formed an alliance with Seleucus and Cassander to challenge Antigonus. In the decisive Battle of Ipsus in 301 BCE, Lysimachus and his allies emerged victorious, leading to the death of Antigonus and the division of his territories.

Following his triumph at Ipsus, Lysimachus secured control over Asia Minor and Thrace, establishing the powerful Kingdom of Thrace. However, his rule was marked by frequent conflicts with other Diadochi. Lysimachus clashed with Demetrius Poliorcetes, the son of Antigonus, in a series of battles over control of various territories. These conflicts showcased the shifting alliances and power dynamics among the Diadochi.

Furthermore, Lysimachus faced challenges from Pyrrhus of Epirus, who sought to expand his influence into Lysimachus's territories. Pyrrhus engaged in military campaigns against Lysimachus but was ultimately repelled. Despite his military successes, Lysimachus's later years were marked by internal conflicts and familial strife. His relationship with his son, Agathocles, deteriorated, leading to a violent confrontation in which Lysimachus was killed.
