“ | Tactical Austrian Musketeer that gains different benefits in each stance as well as from promotions. | ” |
—In-game description |
The Line Infantry is a gunpowder infantry native warrior in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Knights of the Mediterranean that can be trained at a Trading Post built on a House of Habsburg palace.
Overview[]
The Line Infantry is a ranged heavy infantry similar to the Musketeer, being specially effective against cavalry in melee combat due to a damage multiplier, but vulnerable to artillery and light infantry. Compared with the Musketeer, the Line Infantry is available in the Fortress Age, has less hit points and damage, has ranged resistance, an increased coin cost and reduced food cost, but a faster ranged Rate of Fire, more speed and Line of Sight.
Promotion[]
The Line Infantry benefits from the Combat Promotion. This ability increases its hit points and damage when defeating military enemy units, up to a maximum of three units. These values can be higher with Home City Cards or upgrades that increase Musketeer-type unit hit points and damage, like Flint Lock and Socket Bayonet.
Promotion | Bronze Rank | Silver Rank | Gold Rank |
---|---|---|---|
Combat Promotion | +20% hit points and damage | +30% hit points and damage | +45% hit points and damage |

Trivia[]
- The Line Infantry is modeled after the infantry regiments of the Imperial Austrian Army under the rule of the Habsburg monarchy. Its in-game appeareance is based on the uniform used during the Napoleonic Wars.
- The helmet of the infantry regiments' uniform was replaced by a shako in 1806, although many of them retained the helmet until 1809.
- The term "Line infantry" refers to the basic European infantry from the late 17th century to the mid-19th century that used linear tactics. They consisted of infantry battalions formed in lines of 2, 3 or 4 ranks of soldiers and fired volleys with their muskets at the command of officers. Linear tactics were used to great effect by Frederick the Great and his enemies during The Seven Years' War, and very successfully used by Gustavus Adolphus at the Battle of Breitenfield.
- Therefore, the Carolean, the Musketeer, the Regular, the Soldado, and some other Musketeer-type units could be considered "Line infantry".
- A more historically accurate name for the unit could be Whitecoat, as they were known due to the traditional color for the Austrian infantry uniform, in a similar manner to the British Redcoats.
History[]
“ | The House of Habsburg ruled much of Austria, Central Europe, and even occasionally Iberia and Mexico from the medieval period up through the 20th century. During the early-modern period, several tacticians – most notably Gustavus Adolphus – departed from the existing standards of engagement and innovated. The result was a system where tightly-packed lines of firearm-bearing troops fired a series of volleys at their adversaries. Although effective in an open field, they were not without weaknesses, and any sort of combat on rough or dense terrain or against irregular combatants put them at a disadvantage. | ” |
