Leonidas is an infantry hero in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Chronicles: Battle for Greece, based on the heroic leader of the Spartans. He looks identical to the Hippeus, with a hero glow. As a hero, he cannot be converted and can regenerate health.

Leonidas I was the king of Sparta and a central figure in Greek history, best known for his heroic leadership at during the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE during the Greco-Persian wars. As one of Sparta's dual monarchs, he led a small coalition of Greek forces, including his royal guard of 300 hippeis, against the vastly superior Achaemenid Persian army of King Xerxes I.
Leonidas and his men held the narrow pass at Thermopylae for three days, inflicting heavy losses on the Persians and demonstrating extraordinary bravery and discipline. Despite being eventually outflanked due to betrayal, Leonidas and his contingent chose to remain and fight to the death, enabling other Greek forces to retreat and regroup. This led to delay in the Persian advance, and Leonidas himself become a symbol of sacrifice.
Trivia[]
- In one of Leonidas's dialogues, while fighting until the end at Thermopylae in The Hot Gates, he echoes the Spartan war poet Tyrtaeus's exhortation to "make life your enemy and hold the black spirits of death dear as the rays of the sun".[1]
