Mythology[]
“ | Leizu is revered as the goddess of sericulture, the art and process of silk production. After meeting and marrying Huangdi, she taught his people how to raise silkworms and weave silk fabric. There are various myths about how she discovered the art of silk weaving. According to one version, she ate fruit from a mulberry tree and began vomiting silk threads. She then used leaves from the same tree to feed moths, which transformed into silkworms. Leizu remains an important figure in China and is still worshipped by sericulturists. A temple dedicated to her in Yuan’an County, Hubei Province, commemorates her significant contributions to Chinese culture and life. |
