A giant villager who excels at gathering Wood and Gold. Can construct buildings very quickly.
—In-game description

The Kuafu (Chinese: 夸父) is one of two Chinese worker units in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars, the other being the Peasant. It is a powerful giant who specializes in collecting wood and gold, and in constructing buildings. It throws stones when attacking enemies. Like Peasants, they can be garrisoned in buildings, though will not do so automatically when a town bell is rung.

The total worker limit is 100, regardless of the population cap status, with Peasants counting as 1 and Kuafus counting as 3 towards the limit.

Tasks[]

Kuafus are mainly used to gather resources to fund the player's many technological upgrades and unit creation, in addition to building and repairing structures. However, they are also solid fighters and are effective against siege weapons and buildings. They still flee when attacked like other workers, unless manually ordered to fight.

Kuafus gather all resources faster than most other workers, especially wood and gold, and are only matched by the Citizen in terms of food collection, whose hero form outperforms them in that respect. They also build and repair three times faster than Greek Villagers, except for Town Centers, which they build only twice as fast.

The Kuafus' efficiency is particularly notable in comparison to the Peasant, the other Chinese worker, who gathers, builds, and repairs less efficiently than other civilizations' workers. They are, however, considerably more expensive in terms of resources and population space, and contribute to the overall worker limit at a greater ratio, so cannot practically replace the Peasant altogether. Food gathering in particular is better left to the Peasants, since just two of them outperform one Kuafu for any food type.

Kuafus gather resources from different sources at different speeds. The table below shows all gathering rates in descending order.

Relics[]

The following Relics benefit Kuafus:

Hero[]

Hero Villager. Chieftain of the Kuafu clan who works faster than ordinary Kuafus. Good against myth units.
—In-game description

The Kuafu (Hero) is the hero version of the Kuafu available only to Nüwa after researching Kuafu Chieftain. Limited to one, he is respawned 4 minutes after he dies. He is 30% more efficient than the standard Kuafu in terms of gathering, constructing, and repairing, and has a higher ranged attack damage and hit points. He also has a carry capacity of 50. Like other heroes, he is effective against myth units.

While having decent attack and resistance when fully upgraded, the Kuafu Hero does not automatically engage in combat when attacked, but instead flees, like other Kuafus. As such, he requires some micromanagement to make use of his combat abilities. As a hero, he can collect Relics, without even requiring a Temple to be constructed to unlock picking them up.

Gathering rates[]

The Kuafu Hero gathers resources from different sources at different speeds. Compared to ordinary Kuafu, he gathers resources 30% faster and has +150% increased carry capacity. The table below shows all gathering rates in descending order.

Changelog[]

Immortal Pillars[]

  • The Kuafu (Hero) has 225 base hit points, 40% hack armor, 50% pierce armor, 8 attack range, a damage multiplier of 6× against myth units, and respawns in 120 seconds. He also gathers, builds, and repairs 50% faster than regular Kuafus.
  • Kuafus and Kuafu Heroes display their melee attack mode when idle, despite them using their ranged attack against all targets except herdables.
  • They have an attack bonus vs. the Sentry Tower line, specifically.
  • With update 18.12962:
    • Kuafus' faster build rate bonus is slower for Town Centers compared to their bonus for other buildings (this was intended from the start but did not have the desired effect until this update).
    • The Kuafu (Hero) has 200 base hit points, 30% hack armor, 40% pierce armor, and 6 attack range.
    • Kuafus and Kuafu Heroes display their ranged attack mode when idle.
  • With update 18.21333:
    • The Kuafu and Kuafu Hero's attack multiplier vs. the Sentry Tower line now affects the tower unit type (thus including Mirror Towers and Tower additions).
    • The Kuafu (Hero) has a damage multiplier of 3× against myth units, and respawns in 240 seconds. The latter change had been intended for update 18.12962, but was not implemented due to an oversight. He also gathers, builds, and repairs 30% faster than regular Kuafus.

Mythology[]

Scientific name – Gigans sinensis
Size – 2100 lbs
Diet – massive bodies of water

Kuafu is a giant in Chinese mythology known for his immense size and incredible speed. He is most famous for his feat of chasing the sun. Overconfident in his own strength and speed, he attempted to catch the sun but grew thirsty in the process. He drank entire rivers and marshes, yet could not quench his thirst. Ultimately, he died from dehydration.

According to some scholars, Kuafu may have been an ancient tribe in China from which the mythological giant received his name.

Age: Unknown, often depicted as ageless due to his mythical nature
Homeland: Mythical Northern Wilderness, Ancient China
Occupation: giant, sun chaser

Trivia[]

  • Despite being a human unit and a worker, the Kuafu has the same spawning sound as myth units, with the same bagua symbol appearing underneath when created (see below).
  • The Kuafu has a scientific name in its in-game help section, which was erstwhile used only for myth units. This, combined with the above point, hints that it was originally intended for Kuafus to have the myth unit type.
    • The translation of its Latin scientific name is "Chinese Giant".
  • According to the help section of the Chasing the Sun technology, "chasing the sun" is a Chinese idiom used to refer to someone overly ambitious or extremely determined. In Mandarin, this idiom is written as 夸父逐日 (kuāfù zhúrì).
  • In the Arena of the Gods game mode, it is possible to have two Kuafu Heroes in scenarios where the "Aphrodite's Rite of Flourishing" World Twist is active. Research Kuafu Chieftain and keep the Kuafu Hero alive. If he is still alive by the time the workers are doubled in number, a copy of him will also spawn.
    • Their food, gold, and favor costs can be modified by most effects that work on other worker units (like the World Twist mentioned above). If the player has enough favor to spare, they may choose to train a few Kuafus before the abovementioned World Twist's villager doubling effect occurs.
