The King is a unique heavy melee cavalry leader of the English in Age of Empires IV, that can be crowned at the Abbey of Kings. Only one can be trained at a time, and the first one is queued automatically for free upon the completion of the landmark. The King receives free upgrades upon advancing through Ages, like the Khan.
Ability[]
Kingly Presence (Passive): The King has a lesser version of the Abbey's aura. It can heal out of combat units within a 5-tile radius (including siege engines) for 2 hit points every second.
Tactics[]
Because of its armor, high hit points and attack, and healing ability, the King can be used in a manner similar to French Royal Knights, raiding Villagers on exposed resources and running away before having to take fights. When used in this manner, he pairs well with Horsemen, who benefit from the additional survivability afforded by the healing aura.
Outside of combat, the King can be utilized as a sort of mobile healing tower. Being much faster and more durable than a Monk, with healing in a wide area, the King can provide healing at a forward base where units can fall back to be topped off between engagements in situations where the Abbey of Kings itself is too far to return to.

Note: Because the King is created out of a religious landmark, and not military one, he is not affected by Military Academy.

Changelog[]
- Originally, the King costs 150 food, 150 gold. With update 7.0.5861, he costs 100 food, 100 gold.
- With update 7.0.5861, the King has an ability button (does nothing), hovering over which shows his aura range. He now also heals himself with the aura.
- Originally, the King could be converted, and converting it back after training a new one could give the player access to multiple Kings. With update 9.1.176, the King cannot be converted.
- With patch 10.1.48, the first King is now queued for free upon completion of the Abbey of Kings.
- Originally, the King had a train time of 35 seconds. With update 11.0.782, this was increased to 50 seconds.
Campaign version[]
A variant of the King appears as an enemy hero unit in the Aftermath of Towton Historical Battle. He is described as the Duke of York in the objectives, but the unit is simply called 'King'. He has the same stats as a Castle Age King, along with the Kingly Presence ability, but in conqueror mode, he also has an extra ability called either 'Conqueror' or 'Inspiring Leader' depending on if the enhancement is described on the granting or receiving unit.
Conqueror/Inspiring Leader (Passive): All units within a five tile radius gain +50% attack and +150% attack speed
