| —Age of Empires IV description | ||
The Khan is a light ranged cavalry unit in Age of Empires IV and is unique to the Mongols. Only one Khan is present on the map at a time. When killed, a new Khan will reappear automatically at an unpacked Town Center after 120 seconds.
Much like the Scout, the Khan has exceptional Line of Sight, can herd Sheep, regenerates hit points (at a rate around 1 HP per 2 seconds), can see into stealth forests, and see further than other units within stealth forests. Like the Mangudai, the Khan can fire arrows at a target while moving starting in the Feudal Age. Khans are upgraded for free upon reaching the next Age.
Ability[]
- Signal Arrows (Active): The Khan can fire a Signal Arrow to temporarily buff all units (including the Khan) with an aura with a 8.75 tile radius for 5 seconds. Activating one Signal Arrow puts all Signal Arrows on a 90 second cooldown. The Whistling Arrows technology will increase the duration and range of each signal arrow.
Maneuver Arrow: Increases the movement speed of nearby units by +33%. Does not affect Villagers.
Attack Speed Arrow (requires Feudal Age): Increases the attack speed of nearby ranged units by 50%. Does not affect siege engines.
Defense Arrow (requires Castle Age): Increases the armor (melee and ranged) of nearby units by +2.
Scouting Falcon (Active): Release a Falcon that provides vision in the area (10 tile radius) for 30 seconds. Has a 60 second cooldown.
Tactics[]
The Khan begins as essentially an improved Scout. While having comparable stats, the Khan also has access to Maneuver Arrow to boost its speed temporarily, and the Scouting Falcon, which can more quickly reveal parts of the map, including areas that cannot be reached easily. In the early game, the Khan should be utilized to collect Sheep, locate resources, and scout enemy bases. Due to its low stats and lack of more beneficial Arrow abilities, the Khan cannot contribute much to fights in the Dark Age.
Starting in the Feudal Age, the Khan gains the Attack Speed Arrow ability, and its stats become boosted to slightly more than that of a Scout. While it still cannot do much in a one-on-one fight, it can begin to support groups of units in early rushes by granting them more attack speed, and participate in hit-and-run strategies alongside Mangudai and Keshiks. Whistling Arrows becomes available in the Feudal Age, allowing for longer duration buffs, especially important if the player commits to early aggression.
The Khan transitions to a more combat-oriented unit starting in the Castle Age, and especially in the Imperial Age, where its damage and hit points increase significantly. Even though it fares well in single combat by the Castle Age, its primary role becomes supporting armies through the use of its Signal Arrow abilities. The Khan should almost always lead the charge with the player's primary army, boosting either the damage or survivability of units as needed, or allowing the army to retreat from unfavorable fights.
