Myth unit. An amphibious demon who can traverse both land and water. Good against human soldiers and ships.
—In-game description

The Kappa (河童) is an untrainable amphibious myth unit in Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear that is present in the Yasuko's Tale campaign and available in the Scenario Editor. Its attributes change depending on whether the unit is on land or in the water.

Sending the cheat code DANK MEMES transforms all units in the map into Kappas.

Special ability[]

  • Amphibious (Passive): Kappas are able traverse both land and water. (Uses aquatic form and attributes on shallows/amphibious terrain)

Mythology[]

Scientific name – Daemon aquarius
Size – 85 lbs
Diet – horse meat and cucumbers

The Kappa, a water sprite, is a particularly infamous yōkai. With the head of a monkey and a tortoise shell on its back, this violent and demonic creature is known for luring unsuspecting people into bodies of water to drown them. It often targets women and children but is also known to harm or kill horses. However, not everything about the Kappa is negative. It is an expert in setting bones, and some doctors have even sought its help to learn these medical practices. Despite its violent tendencies, the Kappa is relatively easy to outwit. Humans can bribe it with a cucumber or trick it into bowing. Atop the Kappa's head is an indentation filled with water – if this water spills when the Kappa bows, it becomes powerless and can no longer attack.

Trivia[]

  • While the Kappa are untrainable, several of them appear as uncontrollable units when the god power Swampland is used. These Kappas remain submerged in the swamp with their heads poking out, and jump out to capture passing enemies and drown them.
