History[]
| “ | Junkozosen were rudimentary, semi-structured boats used in ancient Japan. A step above dugout canoes, Junkozosen had added side planks to improve stability in ocean waters. Scholars agree that the transition from dugout canoes to Junkozosen was a direct response to the rise in maritime trade – as inter-regional trade became more frequent in medieval Japan, the need for advances in shipbuilding grew. In addition to trade, Junkozosen were also used for fishing. They were typically constructed from cedar or cypress trees. This semi-structured boat represents a transitional period between simple canoes and fully structured plank ships. | ” |
