Journey South is a unique, special random map in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.
Description
Journey South is a unique map that features different "layers" or "strips" of different climates the further one travels south - or specifically - top-right to bottom-left. The top of the map features a snowy area, with the bottom getting progressively warmer and grassier as one travels south. All players have their starting Town Centers along the top-right side of the map, making all team's starting points relatively close to each other.
As resources near the Town Centers dwindle, Villagers have to travel further and further south (to the bottom-left). The top-right strip of the map is a snowy area with small patches of dead trees and snowy bushes, along with all the standard starting resources for each Town Center. The main animals of the map are Geese as the herdable ones, and Ibexes as the huntable ones. Animals are only found in the top strip. The abundance and size of Gold and Stone Mines stay consistent throughout the entire map.
The next strip down - where it becomes slightly grassier - is also similar to the strip of land above in terms of resources, the only difference being the visual climate of the area and lack of animals. The next strip down features a river that stretches across the entire map, containing many fish, with sheets of ice as the walkable area, allowing land units to get down to the next strip.
The strip below the river is entirely grassy, but features snowy trees in bigger groups than the areas above. The strip below that has dirtier grass, and much larger groups of trees than the areas above. The next strip down is lined with many Relics. The final, bottom-most strip is the same as the area above (in terms of climate), but with the only difference of trees being in extremely large groups.
