“ | Oh, these bastards! They seem not to take me seriously! I will show them! No more mercy to our enemies! Spare no one! | ” |
—Dialogue in A Kingdom Divided |
John the Fearless (French: Jean sans Peur ; Dutch: Jan zonder Vrees; 28 May 1371 – 10 September 1419) is a cavalry hero unit in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Lords of the West. As a hero, he cannot be converted and can regenerate health.
Campaign appearance[]
He appears as the protagonist of the scenarios A Kingdom Divided, The Wolf and the Lion, and The Cleansing of Paris in the Grand Dukes campaign.
History[]
John the Fearless, also known as John I, was a scion of the French royal family who ruled the Burgundian state from 1404 until his death in 1419. He played a key role in French national affairs during the early 15th century, particularly in the struggles to rule the country for the mentally ill King Charles VI, his cousin, and the Hundred Years' War with England. A rash, ruthless and unscrupulous politician, John murdered the King's brother, the Duke of Orléans, in an attempt to gain control of the government, which led to the eruption of the Armagnac–Burgundian Civil War in France and in turn culminated in his own assassination in 1419. Philip the Good was one of his sons, and became his successor.
Trivia[]
- One of John's earliest feat of arms was at the Battle of Nicopolis, fighting alongside the imperial forces of Sigismund (the main antagonist of the Bohemian campaign) against the Ottoman forces of Bayezid I (the final antagonist of the Tatars campaign). It was during this battle that he earned his cognomen of "Fearless".
- The player will get 38 gold if they lose John the Fearless (as well as Philip the Good). This is probably related to an originally intended civilization bonus for the Burgundians (which was removed before the release of Lords of the West): fallen Knights would return half of their gold cost, precisely 38 gold (assuming rounding up).
